Is there a lag time between when you see the attack and when it actually hits you?

I noticed in a lot of the boss fight, even though I am cleared of an attack I still get hit by it anyway. Is there a delay between the HARD math of when it hit you and the visual of when it hits you?

Unlike Wow who you can avoid in real time, there seem to be a good two second delay that if you are not caught up you die.

An attack is calculated as soon as the cast is finished. So for example, let's say Titan uses his Weight of the Land. You move out of the ANIMATION (the big circle under you), but the cast completes before the center of your character (your character only takes up one pixel at his very center) is out. The attack will still hit you, even though the animation appeared to go on longer.

Another example. Twintania prepares Death Sentence. You cast Stoneskin. Your Stoneskin goes off AFTER the cast bar is finished, but before he actually hits the target. It will count Stoneskin as coming after Death Sentence, and thus won't reduce the damage.


In other words, the best way to determine whether you're going to be hit or not is to target or focus target the enemy and make sure you're out of something BEFORE the cast bar finishes, even if the animation itself is longer.

You get registered as hit when the circle disappears/cast bar completes not when the animation goes off. So even if you clear when the mob preforms the attack, if you were not clear of the red then you take damage. Because the game is in a server live state and not a client side one, you may need to be clear well before the red disappears, depending on your connection. For myself, there are some times of day I can not try anything dodge intensive (such as titan HM) since by the time the aoe marker appears it is already too late to dodge. For me lag has improved since some of the adjustments made in 2.1, but others have been complaining about the lag being worse. Some people have been helped by using VPNs.

What is VPN?

A VPN is a virtual private network, such as Battleping that in some cases can shorten the amount of hops data is taking to get to SE's servers. They are private companys, with their own sub fee.

Pingzapper is the cheapest I've found so far and the only one that works for me. My ISP throttles FFXIV as if it were a P2P program or something, so without it I've had 2-3 seconds of lag ever since 2.1. There was some before 2.1 too but this is full-on rubberbanding or finding myself completely unable to dodge things. I hate having to pay $4 extra per month to play this game just in principle, but that's life I guess. ISP and SE are both doing nothing about it despite hundreds to thousands of players with the same problem.

I get it all too frequently, but in most cases it's not serious enough to justify me paying for VPN service. I won't do it.

However, if the mob dies before animation has finished, then nothing will happen, even if the cast bar had already finished. Same thing with stun, if stun lands before mob's ability animation finishes, no damage or whatever will be taken. Of course, the animation must still not finish server-side, your side doesn't matter.

If your having this problem, try using a program like WTFast to improve your ping to the servers and improve overall connection. Been one shotting Titan Ex since I have started using this.
