The Hildebrand stuff is a great detour but it's definitely side-story material.

Very basic "good vs evil" story that felt mostly contrived and gambled big on the player being interested enough in the lore to sit through endless dialogue boxes about it. Kam8T88, honestly... I use to like JRPG. And the story of FF XIV is not a like a typical JRPG. At least not the development. Most people who say that is like a typical RPG is people who don't like those JRPG
FF XIV main story is not like a typcal RPG, is just bad, very bad, and very bad developed.
Just spare players that pain. Let the story in the game, but don't make it compulsory to do the dungeons and the high end and make use of mounts and such thing. Just something you can do, in case that you want. -
