Usually I play the stealthy rogue but I can't decide what to do here. I never healed or tanked so no idea how difficult it is (or how much hate I'll get before I learn how to do it).
I'd like to be something useful..and advice?

Welcome to Eorzea!
If you've just started in the game, don't worry too much about trying to find a 'favourite' class - just level your starting class to 10, which is when you can unlock the Armoury System fully which allows you to change class at will.
If PGL is your starting class, then that's probably the closest to a 'rogue' type class in the game currently so I'd recommend to stick with that for now, especially if it's a type of class you enjoyed in other games. PGL are pure damage dealers though and hence, they're very powerful and, more importantly, have some very useful abilities you can use with other classes later in case you do decide to change. But really, it's up to you. :)
Well my advice is to play an archer as your 1st class then, since they are easier to play then the other class's, and when they become bards their songs are really handy, and of course you can choose to be another class at any time once you hit lvl 10 and have the required main story checkpoint done! (or even play them all!!)
Hi and welcome,
What Enkidoh said :)
If you follow the main story quests at one point you will travel to other places.
There will be a lot of low level quests to the cities you will visit
It is a good point to start trying out different classes in each cities.
Have fun
ok, so really you start as one thing but can become anything?
Pretty much what everyone else has said: your decision doesn't really matter that much, since you can just change whenever.
I must say that I was a bit upset, in starting the game, that there was no 'thief' class. I felt that was one of the Final Fantasy classic classes, and it just wasn't there. Maybe they will add it later?
Exactly you can become anything.
ok then. time to pick a home and jump in. thank you.
IMHO
Easy - Hard
DPS< TANK < HEALER
I want to be, a space ship ranger!
Imo, PLAYING a tank, is the easiest role.
But you're skill isnt what determines your performance.
Its far too easy for someone else to F up your role. (Then blame you.)
If you have friends, go tank. If you plan to play with strangers, go DPS.
Healer is dead easy until max level, but even then, its roughly on par with DPS difficulty at endgame.
DPS have a bazillion DoTs/debuffs/buffs to micro manage, while trying to dodge stuff, whilst a healer has HoTs/debuffs/buffs/HP to manage.
1 single mistake on a healer is more noticeable than 1 single mistake from 1 DPS.
(If all DPS make a mistake, its a wipe of the PT though.)
because DPS can be carried in easier content, try DPS. But once you get to the hardest content, dont expect DPS to stay be the easiest.
