Let me start by saying, I don't want Fishing to be changed into a profitable Disciple of Land. Not to say I'd be completely against such a thing, I just happen to enjoy Fishing as it is now, though I will admit, as just a fun activity to do it is quite lacking. So, some suggestions;
- Deep Sea Fishing Competition. A Duty Finder event for Fishing, you and seven other people end up on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Objective: Catch the biggest fish possible. Could also be a Skyfishing version with players on an Airship.
- Server Fishing Competitions. This comes from my enjoyment of just wanting to make my Records as outstanding as possible, basically on a daily or weekly basis, you have X amount of time to catch as big a fish as possible, and your result is compared to that of everyone else on the server (this could be achieved through a Levequest style system I imagine). However often this can be done, it should be limited to one type of fishing location (Deep Sea/Dune/Sky/etc) so that one person cannot monopolize victory.
- Ultros FATE. Similar to the Behemoth and Odin FATEs, except he has to be fished up first, not really similar to the other suggestions, but this game lacks Ultros. He could even comment on where he has been fished up; related to the type of fishing (Deep Sea/Dune/Sky/etc) and the general zone. Remember, don't tease the octopus, kids!
(seriously though, how epic would it be to fish up Ultros and have the entire server rush to your side?)- Cross-Disciple events, somewhat like Hamlet Defense, but not really... This could also easily use Botany and Miner, as well as the Disciples of Hand, but for the sake of this thread, a Fishing example. Fishers queue up on the Duty Finder (or form a party) and get matched with a regular dungeon party (1 tank, 1 healer, 2 DPS) and some other Fishers. Objective: Fishers have to fish as many fish as possible, the combat classes have to defend the Fishers. Obviously Stealth would be ineffective and as well as the regular waves of monsters that could be attacking, Fishers could fish up monsters as well, similar to XI. If certain conditions are met (number of Fish obtained?) an event can happen; something like the Sea Horror from XI could attack, or Pirates. After defeating the boss, a chest appears with appropriate rewards for both Disciples. Like most Disciple of Land Levequests, the EXP/Gil reward (if there is one) could be based on how many points accumulated by getting specific items or HQ items.
Main reason I'd love this event is for Spirit Binding... Properly Spirit Binding on Disciples of Land is... Slow, to say the least... This would provide Disciples of War/Magic with waves of enemies for Spirit Binding, which would also help the Disciples of Land out.
On rewards: Competition rewards could be anything; Gil, Seals, Tomestones, I don't particularly care. The important thing, and I can't stress this enough, is that the winner gets a trophy they can place in their House. The server trophies in particular would be fun to collect.
On records: This might already be the case, but so far I've noticed some baits are... Completely pointless? Would be pretty neat if certain baits attracted larger fish, so while two baits might attract the same fish, one bait will attract larger versions of that fish for more impressive records.
Would also be great if the Personal Records could be expanded to include records for every individual fish. The current page shows your highest record, clicking on a specific section shows you a list of all the fish in that area type. Would also be nice if the Fishing Log said what kind of location an area was next to the areas level (something like: Cape Westwind, Lv45. Deep Sea). Achievements for reaching a certain point on Personal Records would be great too, maybe an S rank beyond A?
Completely unrelated: Forecast system. Please. Would make a perfect ability for Fishing, perhaps similar to Prospect/etc on the other Disciples of Land. Waiting for Rain to catch Little Thalaos was... Painful...

I haven't started fishing in FFXIV yet, but i remember in XI being on the boat and you know who decided to crash my party!!! Absolutely loved that and would be cool to see something similar implemented here.

Something like a Guildhest with 4 DoL and a regular dungeon party set up, the combat classes clear the area while the DoL gather, eventually the DoLs gathering causes a boss to appear; Fishers fish up Sea Horror, Botanists attract a Treant, and Miners could attract a Coblyn.
