Population after this months subscription is probably going to maintain, and even increase as more people get the experience the game (holiday sales, etc.). So after the 2.1 patch arrives, the game is going to remain a huge success.
Everyone that's saying the content is going backwards is saying the TRUTH - including the producer. Let's be sure to rant on the game and developers, and angrily enjoy the new content available to us. :p
I hate to say it, but the people who remain playing the game will be a LARGE number. Let's taste the new stuff people! Content is good, and good is fun! Sharpen your pitchfork haters, 2.1 is just around the corner!

It's true. Haha, as much as I don't like the lockouts, I'm still playing the game. Honestly, the game is a huge success despite people's complaints. It has things other games don't have, so people tend to compare it to other games and what it lacks. Eventually, it'll get those and more. But not bad for a reboot version of the game that failed really hard.

well, I only know that my sister and her best friend plan on playing ARR after the new year has started, so I know 2 people who will start playing and zero people who will stop.
going by this very reliable statistics, gaming number will have increased 2/3rd in January. :) -

Mmmmmm taste like success! Personally i adore this game, if i ever feel like im getting burnt out i play something else for a few days then that FF14 craving creeps back into my brain and im back in game running wp/ak or lvling up another job. This is the most fun i have had in a game in a long time and unfortunately i did some massive game hopping after leaving wow lol. So kudos to you OP and Kudos to FF14!

If you look at it from SE's standpoint the game has been a MASSIVE success for them. They had so many people more than what they were expecting that they had to delay Patch 2.1 a whole month to stand up more servers to handle the additional people. SE made huge money off of FFXI and with FFXIV being way more successful, gamers can look forward to great support and content for years to come.

A majority of the people with negative comments will still be playing. The point of negative commentary is to attempt to enact change and avert the unpleasant things from coming, or at least from staying for too long. If it's ignored and they start to mount up, though, people will begin looking for outs. It's the thing that happened in Cataclysm - yeah, a lot of people were still subbed and playing, but they started running off as soon as something else more interesting and less tedious came around.
It can get much, much better, and much more popular.
It can also get much, much worse.
I would rather it get better. I kinda like this game, all told.
