Let's remove RMT.

What if the market would be closed, trading between players would be impossible?
RMT would be gone.

Of course this causes some problems so to prevent those from being created the following ideas should help:

Replace the market by a NPC that sells all items for a price set by SE (the same amount you would normally have to pay),
This NPC would also buy items at a way better price, the same amount you would normally earn from selling it on the market.

This would remove RMT WITHOUT making any changes to players earning/spending gill.

Please think about the other FF games, you buy stuff from a NPC and sell it to one..was that any less fun?
Just because it's an MMORPG it doesn't mean "everything" should be done together. (playing, chatting together is what an MMORPG should be all about not buying/selling)

Actually buying and selling from players is a core concept from pretty much every MMO ever made

Thing is then RMT would instead sell leveled up characters and accounts instead.

Cheaters and lazy a-holes are the only reason we have RMT problems, if they didn't pay RMT to play for them then RMT would not exist at all in the game.

It's the same as with drugs, people love to demonize the drug dealers, when the real source of the problem are all the f'ing junkies giving them money for the drugs. If people didn't buy drugs or gil then drug dealers an gilsellers would not even exist.

Problem is SE has never punished buyers in numbers significant enough, and rather focus only on RMT while making the game increasingly worse for legit players (e.g. We can't send things to other anyone who isn't in our friends list, and by extension we can;t send stuff to alt characters in the same account.)

So I say Let's focus on removing the Gilbuyer scum instead, and RMT will disappear instantly from the game.

Agree with you totally, SE is mainly screwing us legit players with their "we don't want to employ any more man power to investigate gil buyers, here are some automated countermeasures" strategy.

You will never get rid of RMT. They will always find a way.

The best a company can and should do is to try to keep them out of sight out of mind as much as possible without being a detriment to legit players.

Doing what the OP proposes would basically kill the enjoyment/desire for crafting for a lot of legit players. So I say, "No thanks."

If all previously tradeable items could be bought/sold at an NPC then crafting/gathering classes will be almost pointless to have, or it would force people to be compelled to level all crafting professions if they ever needed materias or to even do their relic quest.
To make any money people would be forced to farm the best thing that the npc buys. Or they could make it so a crafter can do crafting leves for the npc to sell finished products to them.

Economically I don't really see anything inherently wrong at the moment.

But it would make the game very bland and stale as it forces everyone to become self sufficient, and there'd be no need to trade with anyone ever unless it was a gift. It'd make the mmo feel more solo. I personally wouldn't like it just for the fact that it sucks out the fun in an mmo.

Lets just start a rumor that selling gil is supporting terrorism ..ha!...Check mate gil farmer ..bwahahahaha!
