Is there any way to maximize their potential before discarding them?
They can be stored in your inn room. Just make sure they are fully repaired first.
Right now, there is no way to discard AF gear...
There are some gear that you just can't do nothing with once you acquired better one. The Normal AF is one of them. Once repaired, put them in the Storage (not your normal armoire) located in any Inn room. The gear you might have obtained from dungeons can be turned in to your Grand Company for points.
