The Tab targeting is awful. For some reason, its based off what you can see on screen, and not in relation to the direction your character is facing. I've had Tab target an enemy BEHIND my character because I was zoomed out enough, instead of an enemy directly in front of me. The target range is way too far as it often seems to cycle left through right, but it will target enemies so far away you didn't even notice them instead of one again directly in front of you.
On another note: They need a Tab target in place for party members as well(if there is a way on a PC to do it, I have yet to find it. would make healing immensely easier for me)
There actually is a way on the computer, and it uses the same targeting methods as the PS3 - use the arrow keys on the number pad, 8 4 6 2. You'll have to open up Character Config and set your target filters to friendlies only, but then you should be able to use 6 and 4 to cycle left and right through party members, and you can re-bind it to what ever you want. I have mine bound to some side buttons on my mouse.
you have 5 different ways to "Tab target" currently.
*0 key on the num pad acts as a "target directly in front of you"
*then you have target nearest to furthest (and its reverse)
*then target nearest enemy
*then target based on previous targets
*and lastly, my favorite, 4 and 6 on the num pad. (Left/right) which cycles through mobs based on what is left/right of the screen.
mixing between 0 and then 4/6, you can usually target what ever mob you want, with a single button press, even if there are 10 mobs on the screen (no mouse needed)
this alone makes me enjoy the targeting in FFXIV, more than any other MMO.
There may be a lot of targeting options, but they aren't useful in their current implementation. To target with the number pad you have to take your hand off either your mouse of WASD, which isn't a good idea in any of the more difficult fights. Tab is the only real option unless you re-bind the number pad to your mouse or something else easy to reach. Target nearest IS nice with the 0 button, but again its so far away, and I don't want a button that just does that - I want the Tab to automatically target nearest, and THEN cycle. It isn't difficult - in fact, it's a common feature in nearly every other MMO ever created.
While there may be many targeting options and there is possibly a way to get it working to everybody's individual liking, they really need to optimize the Tab target system so it is manageable by everybody. There are simply too many options to be bothered most of the time for most people. For myself after messing with the Target Filters and a few different targeting options I saw in the keybind section, I gave up. It's too frustrating. I want one button that does what it should do. I don't want to HAVE to use Tab and Shift+Tab, I want to just use Tab like I can do in every other game and be able to predict what it is going to target just with simple intuition.
