No, that FF2 remix is corny and shouldn't be anything more than a cameo theme.
I'd rather have this:

Maybe it's just nostalgia. Why do you think it's corny?! Haha.
I just wish they had more uplifitng battle music like this, if not exactly this FF2 one. It's a good remix imho.
The battle music should be this:

Or the 1.0 music

1.0 definitely had better music.
When I went to Mor Dhona and they changed the theme I was extremely disappointed/
I wish they had more, including the ones you mentioned, thematic battle scenes throughout certain areas, not just on the storyline--say FATEs I guess, like the lighting one is a good change of pace :)
Also, FFXIV 1.0 had Nobuo at the helm of music, he makes the battle music iconic and upbeat!
SOKEN makes good battle music too, but he reserved them for boss battles and big FATEs and the storyline.
IMO, normal battles need to have the most important battle beat, cuz, well, we fight in em like 99% of the time, eh.
My only concern is that the one doing the themes right now is not Naoshi Mizuta.
Yep.
I actually don't mind Soken's new battle track which varies in arrangement depending on the region (I particularly like the Mor Dhona and Coerthas arrangements), but I admit I do miss the old 1.0 battle tracks that didn't return (like the old Black Shroud battle theme The Forest's Pulse, the old Mor Dhona battle theme Phantoms of the Lake, and the special instance battle theme The Seventh Gate - the later particularly interesting for Uematsu obviously putting cues in it to his FFVII work, particularly Still More Fighting and J-E-N-O-V-A).
As much as I loved Soken's remix of FFII's battle theme Battle I though, I don't think filling ARR with a bunch of remixes of old FF tracks for no reason other than fanservice would really be a good thing to do. Horses for courses and all that.
You do know that Mizuta actually did do a couple of tracks for 1.0's OST that have returned for ARR? Quick as Silver, Hard as Stone (the theme for O'Ghomarro Mines), and Maelstrom Command (the theme of the Maelstrom which plays in their HQ in Limsa Lominsa) were both his work. ;) I'm not sure if he's done any new tracks for ARR though.
Oh god, her track were memorable... but I'm thinking Naoshi Mizuta's kinda music isn't mainstream...
SOKEN did music for the masses, and it strike the populace a little better then Naoshi's intrument choices.
Some people think Flute, Harp, Violin and other classical instruments etc are retarded... although, I love her music--it's not really for everyone?
Masayoshi Soken and Naoshi Mizuta are both men by the way. ;) You're probably thinking of Kumi Tanioka who is a woman and who worked with Mizuta on FFXI's original OST (but not the expansions). They all have their own unique styles which provide variety in the soundtrack and how the music adds to the immersion of the game. But my favourite will forever be Uematsu. :)
