Ancient Magic
So I was out and about in Thanalan earlier, when a friend of mine asks if I want to come see the new spells he learned.
Ancient Magic?
YES PLEASE!
Loved the huge animations for these in XI, and how cool they sounded, but I wasn't expecting to see 6 elemental farts in a row. Honestly, the spells look so weak, I don't think I will ever bother using them. They do nice damage and all, but look terrible.
Where is the epic spinning tornado? The shattering earth? The explosive fire? The rushing winds and crushing waves, and giant glaciers of ice?
It actually looked like a fairy had broken wind each time.
Hopefully when the TII's come out they might look more powerful than something that would happen when you sneeze in a box of glitter.

there were many threads about this subject and they are redoin a lot of animations/spell animations. I think with the new battlesystem well see some of these changes and since nobody liked the AM one bit they are most likely reviewing most aspects of it like DMG, mp use, graphic, sound and perhaps make it like in ffxi so the AM acutally hits the target and not the ground where the target was when you started the spell... one can only hope :D

Ah, Ancient Magic. By the time they go off, you're already old.
Would do well to make them more interesting to watch. Outside of attack marmots I don't think I have seen anyone use them.

Sorry didn't see other threads on this subject, apologies there, but yes, what a shame that such epic spells look and feel so bad :(
I really loved this game at the start (about 4 weeks ago) but im slowly finding more and more along the way that just bugs me. I hope some of these things are addressed :(

yeah true, oh btw, the word "fart" came into my mind the first time ive seen them go off on youtube...
that was the moment when i focused on my thm only since i didnt see a point leveling a fart-mage.
no worries, there are so many threads double and tripple on the forums :) no need to apologize.

when im on DOL with my lala and go into battlemode... it is exaclty a "fart" animation, perhaps they should combine it with the use of the current AM...

Ancient magic is useless. They cost 100mp (50 if you use the halving ability, but 50 is still a lot), do little more than your standard nuke, take forever to go off, IF they go off, and require that the mob stay in the same area for a long time. Even if they went off instantaneously, their damage is so little, that for half the MP you could have set off two nukes and done twice the damage. I used ancient magic just long enough to discover this fact and then promptly removed it from my bar and intend to never use it again.

Hopefully they redo those as well as add new animations like they said in the Q&A:

I've pondered and pondered, trying to figure out what SE was thinking of with Ancient Magic. The facts that they are class-specific, cost 100 MP, have a six second cast time, and can be cast on other players (not just enemies) -- all these lead me to suspect that SE really had some in mind for these. However, in the end, it just doesn't seem to be there.
My current best guess is that Ancient Magic was tuned for the Alpha version of combat, and never adjusted. Back in alpha the stamina bar had to fill completely, making combat about 5 X slower than now. In that type of situation, the six second cast time and 30 second delay would make AM comparatively more powerful.
But in the current system .... no one yet has found any practical use for them.
My most fun use so far is to cast them on people standing around at the Adventurer's Guild, or on people crafting by the repair NPC, just for kicks. A bit weak for my class-specific, class-defining rank 44 spells :(

i wish these were channeled spells =(
