Black Mage and firestarter.

As it stands firestarter doesn't seem that great it only procs on hit and isn't really a dps increase unlike thunder cloud which has almost double the potency, and can proc itself off gcd.
Would taking firestarter off the gcd be a little too powerful? Just food for thought

firestarter sucks, thundercloud is better. if they took firestarter off the global cooldown would it be better?

Firestarter is a DPS increase because:

1. It doesn't use any MP, which lets you stay in AH3 longer
2. While it doesn't actually increase Fire III's potency, it cuts off recast time, making its time cost a bit lower and thus directly increasing its DPS
3. Its front-loaded damage is great for finishing things you would have had to wait for, occasionally

As a black mage, that would make it much too powerful.

How are you saying it isn't an increase in DPS? Do you not understand what DPS means?

Outside of a Firestarter proc, there isn't a reason to cast Fire III unless you have max MP and is transitioning from Umbral Ice 3 to Astral Fire 3.

Fire III has the highest potency of any of a BLM's fire spells but because it is used to acquire the Astral Fire 3 buff, the damage it does coming out of Umbral Ice 3 is even less than Fire I. A Firestarter proc gives a BLM a reason to cast Fire III WITH the Astral Fire 3 buff in effect. Moreover, it is instant cast and costs no MP.

Generally, yes, you probably don't want to use Fire III outside of Firestarter and in UI3. However, using Swift Cast Fire III at the very start of a fight is good, and some rotations use UI3 > Fire III > Fire III to double dip Fire IIIs - this method may or may not do more DPS than Fire III > Fire I double dip, but it's definitely better burst damage, like for Conflags.
