How is stun (resist) work in general?

This is a pretty basic question but I can't find any detailed explanation. All I can find is about the stun strategy in Ifrit hard mode, which is very specific (stun eruption only or it will start resist it), so I always thought it's a special set up case for Ifrit.

I'm leveling my PLD and running some early dungeons. Yesterday I was doing Hakku Manor (lv28 dungeon). The final BOSS has 2 abilities with long casting time. One AOE and another with high damage. I was trying to interrupt them every time but find myself failing quite often lately.

Someone told me that stun only work 4 times on a mob like sleep, but I think in the Ifrit fight eruption happens more than that? (I only assume this because I never really count that lol).

Is there any general rules for stun that apply to all the mobs (bosses)?

After three stuns within a certain period of time the mob will become immune to them for a short period of time. Some mobs are simply immune to stun. (most end bosses in dungeons fall under this category)

Ifrit is a bit of a different case as interrupting his Eruptions are the only sure fire way to get your LB maxed out.

Also, one thing you can keep in mind is you can mess up a casting mob's spells by running through them so that they're not facing you. Those Thunder III's and Fire III's that take a while to cast are a prime example. Mobs suffer from the same line of sight issues that players do, much to their detriment. :)

Stuns, and by extension, most if not all CC suffer from "diminishing returns", i.e. the CC becomes less effective the more it's used within a specific timespan on the same target. Most diminishing returns have a timer of 1 minute from the start of the first applied CC before they begin having full effect again, usually going 100% > 50% > 25% > Resist. Let's take Shield Bash as an example, which lasts 6 sec baseline with the trait.

Stun at 0:10 - 6 seconds (100% power)
Stun at 0:30 - 3 seconds (50% power)
Stun at 0:40 - 1.5 seconds (25% power)
Stun at 0:45 - 0 seconds (Immune/Resist)
Stun at 1:12 - 6 seconds (100% power)

And so on. Diminishing returns always reset 1 minute after the first CC is applied, regardless of how many times it's used. Ergo:

Stun at 0:10 - 6 seconds (100% power)
Stun at 1:20 - 6 seconds (100% power)

As for Ifrit, he does use Eruption quite often during the first two phases, but usually not enough that you'll get Stuns resisted. You will get a Stun resist if you have bad timing on the Phase 1 to Phase 2 transition, though (Ifrit doing Eruption and dropping below 75% within seconds of it).

Stuns will fail for three reasons:

#1 The mob cannot be interrupted
#2 You missed!
#3 and the most likely: Stuns are effected by diminishing returns. Meaning your first stun will have 100% duration, the 2nd will have 50% duration, the 3rd will have 25%, and the 4th will do nothing. I believe its a 30 second time frame... might be 60 seconds though, I'm not 100% sure off the top of my head.

Some mobs, like Anantaboga, are immune to stun.

For other mobs, shield bash (initial hit) will stun the mob for 6 seconds to allow you to wail on it unfettered.

Just like other stun skills, the enemy begins to build up stun resistances over time.

Take Ifrit, for example.

It is reasonable to see 6-8 eruptions before Hellfire, and if lucky none of them get resisted. It is however possible for #6, 7 and 8 to be resisted, as you have used it so many times before.

One point to this- Only the PLD should ever be stunning, if anyone else lands a stun in the fight, it WILL contribute to building the enemy's resistances.

Hellfire does reset his resistances, though, so you can have a fresh go at it afterwards.

The explanation before was the right one. After the very first Stun, the mob will reset it's resistance after 60seconds have passed. A mob will never be resistant forever, unless he was immune from the get go. After 60 seconds have passed, you can Stun again for 6 seconds and then another 2 times in the coming 60 seconds, before it's gonna be a full 6 second stun again. As long as the enemy is not stunned more than 3 times in that amount of time, he CAN'T resist a single Stun.

Now I understand what was going on then.

I don't think anyone else mentioned it here, but silence works on the same diminishing return as stun...or so i have been told...


if no one silences ifrit (including paladins using spirits as a dps cd), you will likely stun every eruption.

Stun got a 30 seconds counter starting with the first stun.
Every stun after the first reduces the time by half.
The forth stun and following gets resisted.
Each target got his individual timer.
It doesn´t matter who stuns the target. (3 ppl trying to interupt on skill will result in 30 seconds immunity)
30 sec after the first stun the counter sets to zero no matter how often the target has been stunned.


Other statuseffects got similar mechanics with other timers. Blind e.g. got a 60 sec timer before resetting.
Thats one reason good paladins may get pissed by a summoner that uses ruin II instead of ruin I thus screwing his blindrotation.

Just break LOS (by running behind her) on the Void cast and the Fira cast.... A DPS could tank her because of this.
