Not really clear about the purpose of your OP, MIG but I'll try to share my point of view.
I find being in my own a LS all alone(with probably 1~3 friends) makes it convenient because they are members of different Free companies. The structure isn't the same for everyone though. Having multiple Link Shells with more friends that can communicate with their FCs has an advantage.
FCs that are friendly with each other(Leader-wise) and form alliances on occasion, they may center themselves around a link Link Shell to make channels less convoluted. Right now I just have 2 link shells and organize them by social/ event related. How do you plan to set up your chat channels?
