Hey guys,
Several times i've been grouped into AK duties, and the tank or healer/both up and quit for no apparent reason at the start of the duty. The replacements often think its because we are too low dps, me and the other dps class are both SMNs.
Is this true? I thought we put out great dps.
On my server, at least, there aren't many summoners in general.
There are even fewer who are good. As a result, a lot of people don't understand summoner capabilities.
They write it up as slow dot class. I don't come across many in duty finder either.
I've seen good summoners though, and they can melt groups of mobs down.
They do have some ramp up, but it usually balances out since they do such great dps once they have all their dots up.
They are good at aoe and great at single target. I think people just don't trust it cause they don't know.
Or maybe they wanted a single target lb for Demon Wall.
But that's an extremely dumb reason to drop group.
I parse almost everything, and I am virtually never beaten in DPS. They probably leave because they don't like the looks of your gear or something. Which is sad, but hardly uncommon.
Once those dots start ticking, mobs start dying very quickly. I never had a group leave because I was a summoner, and only when I was fresh 50 were to Summoner's not good for AK, but now, heck yeah 2 summoner's on demon wall? I've had groups where we killed demon wall before the bees, no lb used, just dots.
Not only that, more than one summoner can actually screw up boss mechanics by making it skip phases. Look at Garuda normal/hard mode, in hard mode I've seen a one teleport, go into wipe out the rocks attack because of 2 summoners dots just ticking away.
There was a huge stigma that SMN were bad DPS, period, for the first few weeks the game was out.
Now there are much fewer SMNs than before.
Also, SMN is tied, or slightly behind, for most complicated class to play at full potential. DRG is the other. MNK not too far behind.
All 3 of these things lead people to still have a bad stigma associated with SMN, especially if they had a negative experience with a bad SMN already.
However, SMN is fine. Don't let it bring you down, because we're great DPS.
2 SMN on light party is probably the best comp for AK. not sure if bard/smn is better cause of foe.
Nothing wrong with SMNs, they lack instant burst on a fresh target but their DPS is just fine.
People think SMN and MNK are bad because they dont know what sustained dps means. Up to 50 most dps checks are very small burst phases (mainly burning down a little add here and there) so people get the wrong idea about SMNs.
When the monster's life bar moves in slow, big chunks it is more noticeable than when it moves at faster but smaller pieces. DoT damage causes less of an impression than direct damage, even if it is dealing the same or more damage than direct damage. Also, the fact that we are the least flashy DPS class plays a part in it, our spells (and egis spells) are barely noticeable and just don't "feel" powerful.
It's a stigma. Personally about the 1st month of playing i was anti smn and at 1 point i got 2smn's and DF for AK and left on pld. About a week later another DF group and the smn just right out amazed me. Even making me give the job a try(now 50 with relic/dl). I find this to be more of a 2part situation tho.
#1 If the tank is not good and can't handle hate with bane. He might be like it's your problem and look bad apon smn. Really this is his tanking issue.
#2 What turned me off so much on smn was there where so many bad one's i played with. My pld and war where both dungeon grinded 15-47 but then again this can be the case for any job. Just there where more of the bad smn's then any other jobs from my experience.
Conclusion some people will sterotype smn for w/e reason. In the end tho it's a great job, it could use some tweaks but so can others.
