Max Draw Distance
Apparently the beta had a max draw distance setting or slider. Is there some way to adjust this? While the graphics flexibility is great, I'd get much better performance if my computer didn't have to render stuff 50 miles in the distance (stuff I can't even reach).
For the inevitable 'Get a new PC' and 'You actually want fog?' comments, no, I can't get a new PC. The one I have is only two years old and I'm a broke college student. Fog? If it means my animations are smoother, yes.
If there is no draw distance adjustment, has SE talked about adding (or re-adding) it?

Third parties eventually found a way to override it in XI--maybe one day someone will figure it out for XIV if SE never does anything about it.
While we wait, can try going into driver settings and toggling Negative LOD Bias to Clamp instead of Allow. Haven't fiddled with it myself yet, so don't know if it will be noticeable. In theory, if XIV is using negative bias by default it may have an impact on the background texture qualities (and maybe performance). The question will be how bad it looks if it reduces the quality--some reported tweaking bias too much in XI made the textures kind of "muddy" on some systems.

Thanks for the reply. Pretty sad that we have to wait for a third party for such a fundamental thing. I'll try the suggestion you mentioned and let you know what happens.

So, I tried adjusting Negative LOD Bias in my Catalyst settings, but couldn't find anything like it. I also checked a program called RadeonPro that allows us to do it manually, but FFXIV shows a black screen of death when the program is active. I think it's safe to say Square intentionally maximized draw distance, probably to make the game look as visually appealing as possible.
Looks like I'll be lagging until I can afford an upgrade. (Or playing another game.)
