Item Level Question

I'm just getting back into the game after having essentially quit in the middle of 2012, so I'm doing quite a bit of catching up on the changes.

I have a question about item levels and melding. As I understand it, tier IV materia is for iLevels of 75 and above. However, I've noticed a few Darksteel Haubergeons (iLevel 70) with tier IV materia attached.

Can someone tell me how the melders managed to do that? I'm probably missing something obvious. But as I said, I'm doing a lot of catching up on the ARR changes.

I do not believe there is anything i75 or above that *can* be Materia Melded; its all Mythology Token bought gear, or Allagan gear dropped in the Binding Coil of Bahamut.

I want to say that Converting an item of level 25 or higher can result in a Tier 2 Materia, 35 and higher for Tier 3 Materia, and 45 and higher for Tier 4. The lower the item is within that range, however, the more likely you are to get the lower level rather than the higher level (so, an item level 28 is more likely to produce Tier 1 than Tier 2, and an item level 45 is more likely to produce Tier 3 than Tier 4).

Let me explain what happened.

I was going to meld a Savage Aim Materia IV onto a darksteel haub, but the game said that "the selected item's level is too low to maximize the materia's potential" (Critical Hit Rate + 0 in red writing).

However, on the bazaar there are several darksteel haubs with tier IV materia melded to them.

Again, I must be missing something obvious, but I'd appreciate it if someone could point out what that obvious thing is.

That message means that the stat you're trying to add is already capped on the item.

I don't believe that NQ items are stat capped. That's also why they're kind of not worth getting, tho!

Not lvl 45 for IV. its lvl 55+ for IV materia
