BLM - To flare or not to flare, that is the question

I'm sort of new to BLM (Only played for 2 weeks at most)

But here goes...

When convert is on cooldown, is it ideal to use transpose after swiftcast-flare as part of my rotation? For me personally, I feel like it can be a slight dps drop from just Fire I spam.


Also one small question, is it that important to get quelling strike? I notice I get aggro problems during trash mobs. But quelling strike doesn't seem to cut it. (120s Recast for 15s duration)

Quelling strikes is a great ability for us, you should get it.

In regards to flare, there is no reason to use it as a main rotation ability, 1 it is an aoe, 2 it stops us getting Firestarter procs for a period of time.

If you "DO" want to use it when Convert is on CD, thing about getting MP potions, it allows u to get in 1 more Fire/Fire2 then you can blizz 3>Thunder2>Transpose>Fire3 for maximum damage.

Quelling strikes is a must once you get decent gear. With raging strikes up you easily break the ~450dps mark. Without quelling it's a guaranteed aggro pull.

Using flare with swiftcast when convert is off cooldown (using it with transpose is a dps loss) is a slight dps increase and only worth doing if you don't need convert for double flare on adds and if you won't need swift cast for dpssing on the move.

I use flare on occasion. When a big mob is near. If done right with convert n transpose and some good timing you can do multiple times in a row. Prefebly with raging strikes for big numbers. As for quelling strikes I'm not Completely sold on it. If you run with a tank with same or similar gear you shouldn't grab hate. I almost never grab hate. And I have +1 relic and full darklight. Only time I have grabbed hate is either tank with much lower gear then me. Or fire 3 + raging strikes + flare on multiple mobs... do dmg of 1500 +

I'm afraid you're not doing as much damage as you think you are.

Our BLM is pulling hate in turn 4 coil from a tank with 4 i90 pieces and +1 relic and +1 shield. He has +1 staff, i90 chest, and an i90 accessory I believe. Quelling strikes is definitely needed.

not important until coil turn 2 if your group goes for the slashing resistance, but always nice to have
its very good/helpfull when doing AoE, even though, half of the time, it will be on cooldown.

Quelling Strikes is absolutely needed. Once I got Relic+1 staff I'm constantly riding tank threat in AK runs on single target. I'll usually start a boss fight with Quelling + Raging and it'll allow me to melt things while keeping my threat down. I can't use Raging without Quelling anymore.

Quelling is also great to use prior to doing some AOE spam if you're comfortable with the tank you're running with. On packs of 3 or more, I'll start with a Swiftcast + Fire 3 to get my Astral up, then use Quelling and spam Fire 2 and finish up with a Flare, convert, Flare again, Transpose, by that time usually one of the mobs are dead and I'll just focus single target.

Flare is pretty situational. I've partied with another BLM that loves to just spam the crap out of it, but I don't think it's very efficient. For boss fights I'll typically use it if I have Swiftcast and Convert up so I can just instant cast it, get some MP back, then go back into my normal rotation.

I would love quelling strikes, but I have no intention of leveling archer to 34 just for one ability... so I just macroed my manashield/manaward together for some protection when I end up tanking... When I start my rotation I KNOW I'm going to pull aggro, usually one firestarter proc and the mob is on me. If you are never pulling hate and you think quelling strikes isn't necessary, you aren't doing any dps at all as BLM.

Quelling strikes is awesome. It's seen alot of use after I got my Relic...simply running with undergeared tanks. Also shines on AOE speed runs when you're spamming Fire 2 + Flare.

I know not everyone wants to level archer...but it goes up pretty quickly. I'd say it's probably the easiest class I leveled out of all of them.

As to the main use of Flare...I really only use it when Convert is up...or when I'm in an AOE run...otherwise focusing on T-Cloud/FS procs is probably a better idea.
