Just want to start a discussion on the lack of a materials market and the effect this has on storage needs. First off some background I'm a generalist crafter/gatherer and as additional background I play EVE online (hey a game where the market actually works). The problem I'd like to discuss is the lack of storage I feel when I play FFXIV. In most games where the economy has an impact and crafting is complex you need a few things to work together. The first is not to limit access to the market. It does not matter if the market is stalls or a more generalized commodity market By limiting each character/storage dude to 10 market slots you effectively stop them from creating a functional materials market, since the incentive is to prioritize profit per slot instead of profit per item. The other is relatively large storage capacity for goods.
This means that bulk materials are not readily available on the market. This in turn puts enormous preasure on individual storage since crafting uses a lot of materials you generally want to have a large supply of basic materials on hand. Since the market does not carry these materials because of design decisions taken by SE, this presents us with a problem. Dedicated gatherer/crafters are hampered in their ability to market basic materials and are then prone to stockpile internally. Even with 2 storage npcs I find it insufficient to store the materials as my crafting levels increase. Especially since a lot of advanced recipes re-use lower level materials.
Also with item quests being introduced (having effectively bottlenecked the crafters into being unable to supply the rest of the players with goods - instead of fixing the bottleneck SE goes and introduces alternate supply of end use goods to the player thereby reducing the worth of crafters - very disheartening that), and no solution on the market/storage front except trying to make the existing system a little bit more usable, I have to ask:
1. What do you see as potential solutions to these problems?
2. Based on current direction of development do you see SE doing anything about this?
