Free Company Summons - are they still on the table?

I remember reading some time ago (last year) while the original FFXIV was still online and ARR was just in its early dev cycle (heck it was called 2.0 lol) that Free Companies would be able to gain control of a summon e.g. Ifrit and use it at will once before it got returned to the "world" for players to fight over again.
I was wondering any more info on this?
Is it still in the works or has it been canned due to the Realm shattering nature of the Primals in ARR?

IGN have an E3 2012 article on The Future of Final Fantasy XIV and interview with Yoshi were its talked about using Ifrit as an example.
I'm sure I read somewhere else that it would be "a server wide event" when the summon was used so all players would know about it. I guess that in Ifrit's case that would be skies burn red for a few mins.

Anyway anyone know anything more on this please? or could a member of staff shed some light on it please? I mean it was talked about very publicly so surely an update on the idea would be cool, please :D

I never read about this subject before, but maybe they have replaced it with the limit break concept.

They have not replaced it. They said at one point the primals will be as they are now, but later one when they've been out for a while, they will change them to roaming, and that's when the FC thing can happen. Who knows how long though.

Short answer: yes.

Long answer:

The plan is that once people generally stop going to hard mode primal fights, they plan to release more difficult versions (scales in difficulty with number of players fighting) which roam regions much like Odin.

Only when this new version of the primals is defeated will the item drop (only one drops per kill). The item has a mechanic much like spiritbonding, which means it must be built up and used in a certain amount of time or the item is destroyed.

When used: Primal is summoned, performs a super move under your control, then is released.
If expired: Primal is released.

Either situation causes the region's weather to change, as an indicator that the primal is let loose to be defeated again.

SEVERAL live letters have addressed these points, check back on old forum topics if you don't believe me.

it's one of the features i was looking forward to the most.
i really hope they work on it so we can see it in 2.2 or at least 2.3.

I remember reading about eventually they'll be new Primals added and the old ones would roam FATE style but wasnt sure about if the whole FC Summons was talked about again.
I didnt really read the Live Letters until I was in P3/PS3 testing phase since I never played the old FFXIV (old pc).
It's something I'd like to see down the line, hopefully before first expansion pack :)

I think it was mentioned at the last PAX as being in 2.2 or 2.3, I'd assume 2.3 given Crystal Tower was lined up for launch.
