What it meant by retainers can only transfer 1 million gil, does it mean that each retainers carry 1 million? Or each retainer carry 500k each?

Its pretty simple to understand, players can only bring a maximum of 1 Million gil (The rest is taken).

So basically you can bring 5 mill total, probably its 1 mill per retainer.

it specifically says " Gil (3 million gil per character, 1 million gil per retainer)
* Please note that any gil exceeding the above limit will be lost."

You could always buy up as many crystals as you can get if you go over the cap to take with you. Now since it says moogle letters carry over, I wonder could you have a friend send you gil then not open it til you are on the other side? Might work, either way I suppose they are trying to keep people from flooding the newer servers with gil.

Not sure how hard is it to understand 1 million per retainer.

I transferred with about 1.5M and it cut my gil down to 1M even... was the 3M thing only for the free transfers they did when they started the service? this was fairly recently

3 mil character / 1 mil retainer are only for FREE transfer.

It have been 1 mil character / 100k retainer for many month.

thanks for the reply /o/ I just never saw that before. I planned on transferring again so I was wondering about the exact figures. would hate to loose money twice
