FSH, Why does it take so long?

Ok so FSH was my first DoL, the first I took once our inventory size was upped. It's currently r43. Every night for the past few weeks I've been fatiguing it on Blue and Red Corals to help out some GLDs in my LS.

When I've got some extra time, I'll chip in an additional MIN (or rarely BTN) session. Get some Pyrites and Gold Sands. r40 and r38 in those respectively.

My issue is that FSH on the whole takes about twice the time to fatigue as the other two DoL. I'm not sure why they decided to cripple it so badly relative to the other two DoL. Here's some of what I think is wrong:


1) Jig Lag: No other DoL suffers from this limitation, if I'm not quick in the approach phase there is no consequence in BTN and MIN, why then does FSH get it? What about my latency?

2) Animations >.<: I don't mean to rant but no game has been so beholden to it's animations like this one... what do I mean? Well in BTN and MIN you 'get' an item. There is no accompanying animation, with FSH? Oh well looks like I have to waste time watching my toon grab the fish. Oh I didn't get it? Ah well there's a different slower animation for that too... >.<

3) Fish getting away, sometimes they just do, I guess... ok... Jig Lag? I don't know sometimes I'm seemingly very quick but the first jig action still leads the fish to getting away.

4) NOTHING BITES x24!!!!! Ok, one gathering attempt in MIN or BTN? Takes less then 5s... in FSH a successful action assuming a bite takes me 14s (I know this is variable, in g4 at r43 I'm guessing it should be as quick as possible, no?)

BUT IF NOTHING BITES.... This can happen consecutively for 20+ times... in a row. I swear one time Black Sabbath's Iron Man came on Pandora... and by the end of the track... 5m:34s I had still not completed a single fishing action because of Nothing Bite!


Ok sorry for the passion, but I'm going insane because unlike the majority of the FSH player base I'm not running a FSH bot here, I am a human being... and the stark disparity between FSH and MIN sessions is just too much to bear.

What bait are you using when you fish? I notice less "nothing bites" messages when I use preferred bait for the area (ie not lugworms or pupas). It also seems to happen more often as you approach the gathering fatigue cap. I'll fish for about three hours tops and then just let it reset for the day.

Stacking output will reduce your wait times between bites also, but nothing to get excited about.

Fishing needs to be redone IMO.

It should be simple, cast your rod wait for a fish to bite, reel it in.

Get rid of the mini game, get rid of the silly animations.

SE please go take a look at WoW's fishing game or LOTRO or pretty much any other MMO out there.

I get that you added these mini-games to stop RMT and bots but its just hurting the appeal of the game for most people.

If you are going to make mini-games it should be a gauge of a fish vs you, similar to 11's system.

In FFXI, Fishing was even more challenging then it is here right now. You had to "fight" the fish before you were able to reel it in and yes, i loved this challenge! Not many people (expect Bots...) took Fishing to 100 there. I was one of them and i tell you, i had fun each and every level. It had a kinda more realistic feeling to it. I really liked it to go to the little lake in West Ronfaure, turn off names, switch to first-person-view and fish there for many hours for moat carps. Or the legendary Selbina-Mhaura-Ferry rides, the lovely music there, fishing for Befhel Marlins, Nebimonite and sometimes challenging a Ryuga Titan.

I did Fishing in WoW too and it was sooo sooo sooo boring! No challenge at all. Every stupid (i apologize in advance) player was able to reel in fish. And yes, i did "fishing" in Aion too and this was also so extremly boring. Brain-AFK-Item-Gathering. {Thanks for the offer, but i'll have to pass.}

Fishing here in FFXIV is different. It feels, at least to me, easier then it was in FFXI. Once you get a hang of it, like with every other DoL class, it's easy to get the items you want. All in all, i like the DoL classes here in FFXIV more then i did in FFXI, expect for fishing, but meh, i can live with the change.

As for Zephyrs concerns, i can only assume that you choose the wrong bait. There are baits for freshwater and baits for saltwater fishing. You won't be able to catch anything if you use a saltwater bait in freshwaters. And the other way round. I also have situations where nothing bites for sometimes 4 times in a row. But if i use the right bait in the right waters, then i get bites regularly.

I think they made fishing a little different then miner and botanist because, for fishing, you can just choose your spot and stand there all day. No running around, no use for fishing skills. Well, that is, if you only go fishing. If you're into spearfishing then for that you've to run around too. But most people just go for the real fish.

Another thing you might want to consider is the fact, that fishing already has R6-10 spots. And you can start fishingthere right from the start (R1) with the right bait and get the fully capped SP (around 300~) from R1 all the way to R50. Which means, you can skill up Fishing way faster then you could botanist and/or miner.

Of course i can't tell if the possibilty to fish at R10 spots has something to do with the time you've to spend to hit fatigue. But as for me, i'm fine with the system how it is at the moment. =)

they wont get rid of the mini game

but id REALLY like to see the 0 sp casts gone, mining and botony doesnt do this after all so why should fishing have to do it(im talking when it auto fails on the first jig, not when you get no bites)

Mining and Botany get to aim and then get 0 SP.

I didn't make it to r43 fishing without knowing what baits to use guys. I know I use Floating Minnows on my blue and red coral runs, because it favors both types of corals. Just because I'm using the right bait doesn't stop the possibility of 20+ 'Nothing Bites' in a row. And it doesn't change the fact that an equivalent amount of fishing requires twice the time as BTN and MIN.

Basically, thanks for the tips, but I do know what I'm doing. No bait in the current system is going to make up the difference in time committed. And I think the system as is is untenable for the reasons I outlined above.
