Last night I went and upgraded my video card from an AMD 7850 to an NVIDIA GTX 770 (MSI OC Edition). The performance on my old AMD 7850 was actually fine for FFXIV; the upgrade was mainly for a few other games I play.
Anyway, after installing the new card along with the latest drivers I fire up FFXIV and immediately notice problems. As soon as I get to the startup menu I start noticing screen stuttering. The particles floating in the background would stutter/skip every couple seconds. This only becomes worse once I get into the character selection screen, where the same thing happens but only more pronounced. I log into the game, and everything seems fine for the most part. However, after a couple of minutes of playing I begin to notice FPS drops and stuttering within the game world.
So far I've tried a number of things. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers, as well as reverting back to older drivers. I don't think this is a common issue, as I couldn't find any reports of this online. I'm having no problems with other games/programs, only FFXIV.
System specs are the following:
-3.6 GHz Intel Core i7-3820 (64 bit Quad-Core)
-16GB DDR3 1333 RAM
-MSI GeForce GTX 770 2GB 256-bit GDDR5
-800W Power Supply
-2TB SATA III 6.0Gb/s 7200RPM HD
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This has been extremely frustrating, especially since I spent $400+ on something that's supposed to be an upgrade. :confused:

I presume to uninstalled the old drivers and got a new one for your 770, right? -

Yes, uninstalled all of the previous AMD drivers before putting in the card. Not sure what the GPU temperature was, don't think that could've been the problem though.

Same thing applies to CPU. (that's the reason why people can't overclock a laptop because they can't fan out the heat with the limited space within the laptop casing.)Quote:

Either way, I am pretty sure you are not lacking power. Since 800w is kinda over kill in any standard XD
Edit: For example, my Dell inspiron laptop- it is a core i5 CPU and it over heat from 40 degrees to 95 degrees playing league of legands becasue I haven't cleaned out the dust in the fans. The fps dropped from 90fps (at 40 degrees) to 6fps (at 90 degress).
So, my advice is for you to check for temperature of both CPU and GPU. Because that's the first sign of trouble. If nothing is wrong with it (ie. temperature and power supply to the card), you can cross a tick off "hardware" issue. Then you go on "software" (ie drivers) and try to reinstall them. If problem still persist and you have no problem with your old GPU. Return that card and get a new one -

Sounds like a bad card.
All major manufacturers warranty their cards out to just about 100c these days - Most vendors will list 95c but, auto-shutoff is at 100c....Not that it will get that hot, especially the 770 but, it's possible.
If you have time, I'm guessing there's either a lingering driver issue and/or you didn't actually completely purge the AMD driver.
It's suggested that you use the catalyst removal tool on the site and then do a Nvidia cleanse just to be safe. Also, go back to another WHQL if you're having an issue on that driver set.
I have quad 780's w/the hack and I see absolutely 0 issues in game even with only 1 enabled.
If you still have issues on the WHQL, reinstall windows. If you STILL have issues on the new WHQL and new windows, send the card back.
P.S. all major computer parts are warrantied out to 100c from MFCTR. Half life doesn't occur until 120c due to a bad solder. (Can happen at lesser temps but, is extremely rare) -

If not, go to Device Manager at your windows control panel. Look for display addaptor and see if your card shows up there, if not - uninstall all your video card driver, restart, install the GTX one, restart, and see if your PC still recognise the card. -

Man, this is so incredibly frustrating!!! I got home and followed a very thorough guide on how to get rid of ALL traces of old AMD/NVIDIA drivers. Shut down my computer, looked into the case to make sure everything was ok. Rebooted my computer and installed a fresh set of the latest NVIDIA drivers. SAME PROBLEM!
I turned on MSI Afterburner to see if it was a GPU temp problem; GPU temperature reached a MAX of 36 degrees C! No idea what the hell the problem is, and not sure what else I could do. So frustrating!! :mad: -

If it is indeed compatible on your re-check, then yes, you'll have to ask for a replacement.
Edit: But are you sure your system recognise your card? (by checking at Device Manager)
Becasue I hate to tell you to send the card back and wait a week or two for you new card to arrive, unless it's a problem we can solve immediately.
Oh, btw. Did you attach the power cable from your PSU directly into your new card? Because some card do not draw power from the motherboard but instead directly from the power unit.
