Spamming Butcher's Block/Rage of Halone for agro?

Saw this a few days ago when was in CM.
The other Paladin was spamming Rage of Halone rather than using the typical Fast blade/Savage blade/RoH combo.

Does this generate greater enmity somehow?
At least from what I had observed, the enmity created was greater going through the entire combo, rather than just spamming RoH.

Perhaps I was mistaken?
I cannot find Kitru's post regarding Enmity generation per ability either.

Rage of Halone has a baseline enmity modifier of (I think)5 times, meaning 5x the damage done is the enmity from the skill. this means that damage done by Rage of Halone does 5x the enmity of say, any other 100 potency attack that a PLD has regardless of whether it's comboed or not.

However, when it is comboed it does 2.6x as much enmity because you do 2.6 times as much damage.

Using a single RoH or Butcher's Block can be good when another person has aggro because it has such a high enmity modifier, and you need to get aggro immediately, but over time using the combo is going to be more efficient.

Assuming Savage blade is 2x enmity and ROH is 5x enmity, spamming RoH 3 times is 5*100*3 potency worth of enmity, or 1500 enmity-potency. Going through the combo is going to be 150 enmity-potency (fast blade) + 2*200 enmity +5*260 enmity, or 1850 enmity-potency. Plus you do significantly more damage and you apply the super-critical Rage of Halone debuff.

It's also worth noting that a single RoH is more enmity than a single Fast Blade by a huge margin, and 2x RoH is more enmity than Fast Blade + Savage Blade (I think).

P.S. the enmity modifier on Rage of Halone might be less than 5, or the skull sunder modifier might be more than 2, but either way it's more enmity to go through the combo.

Your pally friend was getting 500 attack potency enmity per gcd by spamming RoH by itself. If he had been doing the RoH combo instead he would have been getting an average of 683 attack potency enmity per gcd. Multiply both by 1.6 if you want to see the effects of shield oath.

In terms of damage he was doing 100 attack potency per gcd by spamming RoH, and would've done 203 attack potency per gcd on average if he had used the combo. So he wasn't very smart.

It's significantly worse aggro. Let me put it this way. I had a PLD spamming RoH one day in HM Ifrit. I got fed up with it, because it was stupid and was killing our DPS. After a wipe, I gave him about a 30 second head start, then I blew all my CDs and unloaded on Ifrit. The only reason he kept aggro is because I actually switched targets to nails.

We all know that if I give a real tank using proper threat generation a 30 second lead, I'm not ever going to pull aggro unless something goes horribly wrong.

No. 100 potency at x5 enmity for 3 GCDs (1500) is a helluva lot less than the 150 + 600 + 1300 (2050). On top of that, you're doing a crapton less damage (300 potency v. 610).

For WARs, I actually found a better enmity combo than the normal BB>SE. You lose some uptime on Storm's Eye, but you end up generating a lot more enmity by doing BB>BB>SE (SE drops off as you start the SE combo but Maim is maintained constantly). All right so then, would it be a good idea then to rush in to a boss with a shield lob, hit them with a RoH and then do the RoH combo?
Since the initial hit from RoH would provide a larger enmity generation at the start at least?

It depends upon whether the 2x cushion from Shield Lob is enough to allow you to get into your Halone combo. Personally, I've never had an issue so I wouldn't say that it's an amazing idea. I'd rather get into the end of my Halone/BB combo to generate the massive enmity cushion one GCD early than delay it just to *slightly* beef up that first GCD.

I realize that's a bit of a non-answer, but that's how it is.

I wonder how this RoH spamming came to be.

What gave people the idea that this is better than doing the Halone Combo?

I'd imagine the type of person doing this isn't seeking "better" so much as "good enough" and "easier."

Have run into quite a few of these bad tanks that subscribe to this method of threat generation. My advice is don't bother trying to explain anything to them as you won't like the response you'll get.
