Market Tip for New Players

Most of the low level items you can find in the market are also available for sale on NPC merchants or you can make it yourself.

I mention this because I was selling a lot of jewelry on the markets before I was aware of this, at prices much higher than the NPC merchants, and people were buying them like hotcakes. Once I found out, I reduced prices to the NPC price.

Someone pointed out that markets do provide one stop shopping and is much easier to identify upgrades, so perhaps a premium was reasonable. This is true - I find it much easier to go to the market and identify upgrades than go through my armory or recipes. And can often find good deals that are cheaper than I can make it, much less buy the item from an NPC. But I just wanted to mention this so newbies aren't ripped off because of lack of knowledge.

If you are making a killing on uninformed people then so be it... just my opinion though. I can buy moko grass for 2/ea from the merchant but for whatever reason people on the market like to overcharge (lowest I've ever seen is 10/ea) and I'm never buying it from them but I'm sure someone will. I sell stuff at reasonable prices and I've sold a lot of gear.

I woud like to add to this:
If you can't find a crafting material or a piece of gear on one NPC vendor, that does not necessarily mean they aren't sold by NPCs at all. For equipment, check NPCs out in the sanctuaries in whatever area is appropriate to your level. For mats, check the NPC vendors at the different crafting guilds, they have different selections.

And use wiki guide so you don't have to run around checking all the guilds' vendors.

another tip... not all vendors are in the market, some are hiding and hard to find like the fish monger

item sold from crafter guild x for 2g, but im in another city so i check market, find it for 10g. My dilemma: teleport to the other city for 300g both ways (600g), or buy for 10 each?

yeah I guess I haven't ran into that...I would check the tradecraft vendor in the market, they usually sell things for all craftiing guilds. I also keep my retainer well stocked with crafting supplies that I use a lot of. I have the 3 main cities favorited so it cuts the cost of teleporting in half.

I understand why people use the market I guess I just don't do it for obvious reasons. I've used it too buy HQ mats but I don't spend high amounts of gil to buy them..if they are too much I pass.

They sell things specific to the crafts in their city, and not every item available at the other vendors. Crow Feather is one example that pops to mind. Only sold by one vendor (in Gridania). Used in one BSM and one GSM recipe (plus some CRP recipes, but that guild is in Gridania, so no airship/teleport fee).
