The real question is why you're unironically using reddit...
why do you care if some person in a game, is offender by your characters? Who cares, the topic is a none-issue.
I remember that my Mentor in the Novice Network was like "But, why...?. Why do you want more than 1 character?". And i told her that, I really need to check the races, in order to find the "right" race for me. Some races are really awesome in terms of animations.
For example: So far, for melee, Fem Highlander is the best!. Second to Roegadyn male. I still have to try Lalafel, Au Ra, Viera and Hrothgar. Fem Roegadyn is also another one, that i still have to try.
Female Elezen is a nice character for Knight (Gladiator/Paladin) and Casters.
If i was you, my reply to people who question me irl and in game, is to question me, you must stand on my level- your inability to comprehend my decision is your failure- reply same to anyone and you will go far, and have less head ackee. That or just ignore them
I am not offended at people who have alts, lol thats pretty dumb. I dont care what anyone else does with their time/account. BUT THAT SAID, I could never imagine making an alt. I am very emotionally attached to my character. The way he looks, his name, who he is, etc. I used the free phantasia at the end of ARR as a joke and quickly changed back down to every last feature my character had originally. I can't imagine ever needing or wanting an alt for me personally.
Maybe, i think they get mad, because they think you are going to play that alt and do EVERYTHING again. While you are actually playing that alt to reach certain level (In my case level 50) and be done with it.
The only reason for me to get that alt to 80 is because i really like the character, otherwise, i would leave him there, just to serve as a mule, trader or gatherer, etc. I even like having alts just for the sake of having a character that fits certain "fantasy role", for example: A female Warrior or Male evil DRK.
I mostly make alts to replay MSQ then delete them.
Why do I have 4 alts (in addition to my main) that I haven't deleted? Because I became attached to them for various reasons while I didn't get attached to the dozen or so others I've deleted.
It is possible to get attached to more than one character.
