Shadowbringers Melee DPS Role: Complaints, Feedback, and Suggestions

One thing that I find really weird is why there are even positional-heavy mechanics in MNK, for example, when RoE (after the latest change) + True North lets you ignore them for a good chunk of your rotation?

It almost seems as they had given up on making positionals relevant, and I wonder if in EW they will be as impactful for MNK as it is for NIN. I personally dislike positional heavy playstyles, so I wouldn't mind for that to happen if it means that MNK would get a new mechanic to worry about.

MNK has more positional mitigation because it has more positionals than other melee. It's simple equity. They just haven't figured out how to properly make Riddle of Earth good yet because its current version is too spammy and short, while its previous iteration was too powerful and made Monk into a melee-ranged BLM with how little it had to move.

Positionals aren't supposed to be "impactful" to begin with, (unless your name is Bootshine) they are there for those that want to seek optimal damage and I don't see a problem with keeping them the way they are. Making them less prominent on MNK is only taking away what little uniqueness it has left.

Again, then... if said actions allegedly works to bring it to an equal level to the other melees, why have the complex positionals to begin with?

The fact that they aren't even supposed to be impactful outside of min-maxing just adds up to the feel of irrelevance to the mechanic as a whole.

Positional mitigation abilities are there for when you're unable to meet positionals due to the design of a fight. It doesn't completely invalidate all positionals.
It's kinda like casters using Lucid Dreaming. Replenishing MP automatically doesn't invalidate their MP costs otherwise.
Positionals are one of the things that makes Melee DPS interesting.

It is as I said, they are a choice for skill expression. The same goes for skills like True North and RoE too bar casual content like dungeons and normals. They don't completely trivialize the need for positionals outside of said easy content. That'd be like saying Swiftcast trivializes the need for cast times.

I swore at the beginning of the expansion someone did it on Dragoon and calculated around 500 DPS loss.
Now, except MNK no melee job lose 1k DPS by missing all their positionnals. And that's in the case where you hit the boss from the front without using any "positionnals mitigation".
NIN is probably because of the Trick attack loss.

Since you'll always be at the backside and definitely using True North, in no way this scenario can happen.
If I heard right they did a single run, therefore crit luck can change these numbers by a lot.
