Why do people bother dodging aoe during trash pulls?

Is this thread serious? The op did ever play a healer?... Probably should try and test pulling 12+ enemies and not dodging anything, not even a White Mage with their overhealing can keep everyone up.

If I had to guess, I'd say the OP comes from WoW where a tank can overgear current content with the huge ilvl jumps between patches and most of them have a lot of self healing.

I read this thread, stopped dodging aoes as tank, got rebuked, went back to dodging aoes. :D

That's just what you get for overly "accessible" game design.
I mean: if voids don't force players to respect them, people won't respect them.

Simple. Really. I just did a run of Gauntlet as DNC and yes: most large AoEs hit like wet noodles (I tested it on purpose, as DNC I can run & gun, so usually I dodge stuff anyway).
If a large holy of an enemy trashmob only takes 5% of my HP off w/o any other repercussions like stun, damage down etc, I most definitely would NOT run away from that as a melee. That is just... nonsensical.

Make stuff actually hurt and you will notice people doing mechanics.

Good play incorporates knowing when it is safe to eat minor damage in favor of more uptime b/c a dead mob = permanently mitigated damage.

Depends, some do damage some don't. Mostly it's the smaller ones that are easily sidestepped that are more dangerous, while the larger ones are usually safe to be soaked as a tank.

Also: mitigation CDs exist for a reason. Usually I try to move the mobs as little as possible, so melee can do positional attacks ect.

Are we talking about the same endgame dungeons, in which I can usually forget that there even is a tank that might need healing while I massage my glare button?

To be blunt: this isn't speedrunning. It is using your player power.
If we are powerful enough to ignore stuff and pull more stuff, it would be idotic to not make use of that.

Speed running is sth. else entirely (look at mythic+ in WoW for that kind of messy gameplay) and isn't even possible in FF-XIV's dungeons due to the hard gate every 2 trash groups.

bruh I only made this thread because I had to start doing expert dungeons again to cap on my tomes. I play whm/sch to skip the queue and I never had to use a GCD heal for any trash pulls ever idk what kinda of players you're playing with

I can only remember one or two instances of people actively using a parser in a group here, and even then they weren't trying to establish dominance. I've seen it in WoW pretty regularly though, but they encourage using addons, which include parsers. Parsers are a great tool in responsible hands, but I've seen first hand how they can become an issue. Yoshi P clearly wants to avoid that and I don't blame him. The "don't ask don't tell" policy is fine though.

If it weren't for parsers, people would chase the "clear time" metric just the same.

It's kinda hilarious anyway, we did an expert with 4 healers recently and it still went faster than any run with randoms. :D

It was the one where you dive down on the big creature when it was current expert, yes. I'm sorry I cannot remember the name right now.
Naturally w/o pulling wall to wall but everything still died ridiculously fast.

Ah, so lower-level and unrestricted (which is why 4 healers could queue up). Not surprising in the least. Even my level 60 summoner could take out Aurum Vale, despite it's myriad AoEs. [Had to do that back when the SMN couldn't do the HW daily hunts because he hadn't reached 2nd Lieutenant, and thus the ARR daily hunts, yet].
