Red Mage is top tier - [job effectiveness = player skill]

You say basically : "I'm not doing less dmg with RDM than with SMN, so they're dealing the same" ;

I have no gripe with the first part of your sentence before the coma (dunno how you figure out without a parser but ok, I believe you when you say you, personally, deal the same in both classes)

I have a gripe with the "so they're the same" part that is factually wrong : a SMN deals more single target damage than a RDM when played at same level of skill (a whooping 6% difference at the 95 parses "elite player", and up to 10% when you go around less skilled 50 "average player").

You're taking your personal experience as a reality and pose it as a fact "SMN = RDM" while it is simply wrong, and the only true fact there is that you're less skilled as a SMN than you are as RDM because you're supposed to do better with the SMN.

Probably going to impale myself on a spike here, but I'll add my two cents worth on Rdm as I do play it often myself. I can't quite place my finger on the over all 'issues' rdm has, but I have seen where it will have some fall off when relying on procs. This isn't nearly as bad as prior to the Acceleration change, but still creates a significant fall off point if your not seeing Verstone/Verfire procs for some RNG reason. Granted if there isn't the need to have swiftcast up for a raise, you can hopefully get a swiftcast verthunder/veraero and get a proc to show without dropping back to Jolt II, but this is again RNG dependent where you may or may not see it still even with this DPS saver to keep it up.



This doesn't mean I suggest they increase Jolt to try and fix the problem as that then makes procs entirely moot and unbalances the job. Just saying that in my experience this is where the most uncontrollable loss of DPS comes from when at 80 RDM in comparison to other jobs. The job isn't broken, it isn't unable to keep up in DPS, it just has a very noticeable fall off that can/may occur which makes it more unfavorable at times. This is also why I think SE developers are struggling so much to make a definitive decision as to how they want to approach this kind of DPS fall off since it can balance it, but in a very RNG favorable situation make it unbalanced as well. Again though, this is just my two cents on the community perception vs first hand experience as a rdm - it isn't weak over all, but can have a significant fall off that is outside player control at times making it seem unreliable as a consistent dps solely because of RNG.


Edit: To clarify where I said Devs are struggling so much, namely this is why they have had to adjust the job more than once since 5.0 came out. First was the MP issues along with a slight buff to actions already, and now again they are 'possibly' going to 'increase off-GCD's to include removing fall off damage on multi-targets' but in the same breath say they aren't going to discuss it further than this just yet. This implies they haven't finalized the potency or the decision to go this route and are still testing it.

I mean, not really. Buffs and nerfs always happens. The problem with not getting invites because of the class you play is a community problem.

It's a community problem brought on by a design problem. The fact that they expressly said "yeah, we're going to buff RDMs and bring SMNs down" is absolutely admitting there's a design problem. Don't get me wrong, I hate the meta, I think the community at large's adherence to the meta in bare minimum content is absurd; a bad player with a good class will always be so much worse than a good player with a bad class. But to say that the community adopted some sort of RDM reluctance just as a will of its own is just silly. Frankly, RDMs were just being completely outclassed by a more mobile caster with higher DPS and (debatably) only slightly less utility with a rez, Demi-Phoenix, and Devotion.
