It was a system back on FFXI where you took snapshots of monsters to imprint their souls onto a plate and could use them for battle, or use the souls to augment your monster's abilities. From there you go to the colosseum and force them to fight against other monsters as you issue commands.
It was popular for all of about 4 months.

It wasn't a ripoff...You weren't encouraged to CATCH EM ALL, battle gym leaders, drug your monster up, etc...
It shared similarities, but is every monster fighting minigame a pokemon rip-off?

I guess it depends on your perspective?? both the LSes on the servers I was on called it a ripoff of Pokemon

Er...what? I like Pokemon a lot, I was just making a joke with the FFV thing, since FFV was out before Pokemon, yet allowed you to use a monster to fight a monster, and the beastmaster class had to use something like Pokeballs in order to carry around those huge monsters!

Time to form your own opinion. Do you think it was a Pokemon rip-off? Do you think they sat down and said "LET'S COPY POKEMON, YESSSS!"? Square Enix owns the rights to a little series called Dragon Quest Monsters, which started way back on the GameBoy, maybe they wanted to reincarnate that into an FF minigame.

I don't think they sat down and said they wanted to ripoff Pokemon, no, but yes, I do felt like it felt like another "Pokemon-esque" game, sorry if you don't like that, but as Pokemon is the most popular and afaik sort of the king of the arena in those sort of games...

I'm sure there are plenty of people on both sides, but I've never really met anyone who didn't feel it was a pankration.

and yes Dragon Quest Monsters is the same sort of game, I didn't care for it much, I vaguely remember having some sort of monster that was a bunch of vines at some point.
