You are taking the entirety of the context our of my words.
Which is why I'd accept it as a compromise since I acknowledge they have some degree of similarities. But I think what you're forgetting is theres a difference between "A group of people", meaning an 8 man party similar to coil, and "More people than you can count on screen". Further, gear is probably the most integral part of the MMO grinding wheel, why do you keep bringing up this point like its a negative thing for wanting NMs that drop gear...? Its literally the only real thing that MMOs can offer to keep you grinding.
In the interest of fair play, I'll try to explain it a bit better for you since the error may be on my part.
The experience of NM hunting is not solely based on bumb rushing and zerging a mob until it dies and you get a line of text saying "heres some GC seals for useless armor", FATEs are however in a few manors quite similar. They spawn at certain times, they have a unique name, and often times they are difficult to challenge or unique in some way... however they lack many things that make them a NM or HNM experience. Here are some of the differences.
1) Low level FATE bosses don't offer gear for low level players(1-20 we'll say), they offer GC seals yes, they offer Exp too and gil, which is nice. FATEs work in their own system and aren't too terribly though in the end a bit mundane. They are also timed and despawn, and are a free for all as well, they also have varying difficulty based on how many participants were last in it, making some of them down right unsoloable depending on the last time it was killed. NMs would not be.
2) High level, or "HNM" Fates have no coordination. Even FATE parties who fight these rarely ever talk. There is no combat coordination and its basically just a zerg or wipe situation. This is significantly different than a Coil raid, where communication and understanding is key.
3) They offer no direct drops. Direct drops are a key part to both NMs and HNMs. Yes, surprisingly, gear is something people want from NMs/HNMs, or they're just hollow shells. While they offer indirect drops in the form of GC armor, they themselves, the actual mobs, are just hollow tools for this. Its the emptiness of the NM, their complete lack of meaning and purpose except to be a red circle on your map is what makes them boring and unrewarding to those asking for NMs.
4) FATEs by nature are free for alls, and despawn if left alone, and change their power based on how many participants last fought them. Making in some cases even low level ones too difficult to solo. NMs would remain a fixed difficulty.
Does this help? I know I may not explain everything perfectly, but the differences between a NM You actively solo, a HNM You fight in groups of 4-8, and FATEs which are basically free for all anything goes 1-100+ man zerg fests, are there. Again, drops are important to what makes an NM an NM, but the experience as a whole helps too. I acknowledge the similarities, they are there and I am not oblivious to them. but there are similarities between coil and dungeons, but they are distinct experiences. There are similarities between Hunts and FATE bosses, but they are distinct experiences.
In the same light, if you've ever played an MMO with "Notorious Monsters", you would know that while they share many similarities between FATEs and Hunts, they are distinct experiences in their own right, and offer different reasons for doing them. I'm not denying that a lot of that reason is gear, but isn't everything in this game?
Also, I believe I would classify Odin and Behemoth as the closest thing to HNMs we have... they even have drops that are kinda cool if just for vanity.
Edit: And for what its worth, I edit my posts a few times because, A lot of my initial response is emotional reactions... But I tone it down and I try not to make personal insults. Ad hominem attacks are not productive.
I still want NMs.
