FFXI managed to keep a dedicated fanbase because it didn't shy from evolving and trying new things. XIV doesn't ask for any real dedication and keep doing the same thing over and over and I fear lots of players will be bored sooner or later. In fact, I still XI will still outlive XIV, despite being way older.
You know what some old school games did too ? Use the "trial and error" paradigm to keep you on edge. Of course, it's an archaic mechanism and I'm pretty sure no modern game could be successful by reviving that, right ?
