My etymology post was entirely separate from the debate on whether the use of larboard adds unnecessary confusion to the specific mechanic in question in this game. The post was in response to seeing some level of confusion, such as in the post I quoted, regarding the terminology, usage and history of the words port/portside and larboard. Being familiar with the etymology and history of the words, I gave a quick summary to clear up any confusion and to promote the general spread of knowledge.

So I don't know why you are placing an etymological info dump into an oppositional position in a debate it has no stake in.

I already touched on my position as to the use of larboard in a previous post on pg.4 with my position generally being that I feel they likely did it intentionally to make it more difficult to parse and then I proposed a trick that may help people with it. At no time did I argue for or against the use of larboard and I honestly have no strong feelings either way in regards to whether the word stays or is changed in this instance. I am more invested in people learning a bit about the word and expanding their vocabulary.

I really don't know why you're being so pedantic over this. They are reading it, not hearing it, and if you read it the kanji for it "left" and "right" are present, this is not the case for English, that's 100% the only thing that matters here, not how sagen or ugen are pronounced.

Additionally this is a localization, not translation, things don't need to change in JP for them to change in EN, they change entire lines of text all the time.

Fun little fact...

For anybody that plays WoW, Kul'tiran children will oftentimes say a line that goes something like "Which way is starboard, again?" when you click on them.

I find it funny, becuase you know what, I still can't remember which way is which.

However..... Larboard = Left is easy because both start with L. And if Larboard = Port.... then that's easy too hehe.

It really does just take a few tries to get used to it and figure out the pattern. Lar = left side, if not lar then it's right side. When it spins around, if it uses the same name then you move, but if it uses a different name, then you don't move. Mechanically it's broken down to seeing if the first letter is L or not and being careful of that one time it does the attack while facing everyone. It's definitely one of the big raid killers but if you don't get it down the first try don't beat yourself up too much. Hell it took until my 3rd time going in there to really get it down.

I can't believe this thread is still going. Its not like you have to memorise what every other attack in the game does (oh, wait...). In midgardsormr, he will spin horizontally or vertically, you have to remember which one is out and which one is in. Where are threads calling that BS? Just use word association, like with every other mechanic. As a tank I can tell you that I very quickly learn the names of all the tank busters, and they never have names that say "tankbuster".

No, it's almost like different people have difficulties with different things. Oh wait..
(Also, Middy's attacks differ quite a bit graphically and gives you quite a bit more time to react to them)

I hate to say this but I hate that aoe.. I feel like it's too fast. I can learn the directions but the speed at which it's cast I feel like I'll forever be on the floor, it feels unfair the way it is. The rest of the fight is fine, I just hate that stupid aoe. :c

That AOE marker feels like trolling to me. I have no problems having to react to scripted boss mechanics (like Construct 7 in the Lighthouse) but please don't place markers when you have no chance of reacting to them. That's just evil.

Unlike other attacks in the game it's pretty easy to confuse starboard and larboard at quick glance.

Can't wait for 5.0 when we all get introduced to stern and bow.
