Could not agree more with you Arcell. I never took a break, I have been a steady player since closed beta and this game has come on leaps and bounds compared to what it used to be.
But Chocobo's and Air Ships would be nice :)

I'm in a state of disarray with the game. Deep down I want to love the game, but it's missing fundamental elements that would draw me in. I feel no connection to the world, as much as I want to. If there was even one thing about it that would hook me and make me feel connected, I am mostly happy with the rest of the game.
Wow, it almost feels like I wrote this post, since it is exactly how I feel about this game (even the expectations were the same).
I do not like or hate FFXIV yet. I am just giving it time so it can grow and get better with every patch. The biggest reason for this is that we (NA and EU) did not get to see FFXI beta and release. So most of the content we saw when the NA release came was added by patches and was not there in the beta and/or release.
Funny thing is that now the servers are down I started missing it a lot ... while the last few weeks I was not doing that much in game. I think the core is fine, but it needs LOTS of fine tuning and LOTS of new content.
I would be happy for almost a full year if they end up patching in some good missions/story driven quests like the missions in FFXI.
How do i feel about ffxiv?.. i hate it. But continue reading as to why.

I hate this game because of the state at launch. All the excitement that my friends and i had for the game was erased over the first few hours of play time. There was no sense of accomplishment for leveling, no fear of dying in the game. It felt cold and lifeless... and the reason i still have this hate towards this game is because all of my RL friends have given up and moved on to other games. These are friends that i've always played games with, and who make gaming fun for me.. and most of them have said they aren't going to come back. That irks me greatly.. i feel like the chance i had to have fun with my friends has been taken away by a rushed product. I can only hope that this game becomes worth playing and they will try it again.
Of course if you look at the dvd case for the game (i did this last night as it had fallen behind my desk). "Join players across the globe as you enter a stunning world of endless opportunities. Gather a band of steadfast companions and battle ferocious creatures in the wilds; hunch over an anvil and forge a wondrous blade of legend; relax in a tavern with friends and swap tales of your latest exploits."
What it should say "Enjoy running around a vast world of the same textures over and over again. Don't bother partying to battle those ferocious (huge)gnats, just use the armory system so you can solo the game! Hunch over an anvil playing an annoying mini-game to make 1000's of the same thing to maybe one day make a mediocre weapon of the ages! Try to find a tavern and use the crappy IU and horrid chat features to tell your friends how easy the game is!"
And of course its other 2 key items "Change classes by simply equipping a different weapon or tool" and "Undertake missions known as levequests, a wide assortment of activities that change daily".
Which comes down to "Yes, you can change classes by changing weapons... but you can't choose a different weapon to use with your class despite being able to wear r50 armor at level 1." And "Do the same levequests over and over as there really isn't much variety at all!"
/end rant.
Yeah, the game was disappointing at launch. And still is at this moment. But that may be my fault as i fell in love with ffxi and was expecting something great. So many fond memories and good times. I had more fun in the first 30 minutes playing ffxi than i've had playing ffxiv total.
I hope they can make it worth wild, i hope i can actually have fun with my friends on this game. Its really going to have to do a complete 180.. so i watch these forums and wait to see what happens.
Maybe if i get bored i'll go level conj to 50 then get cure 3 on a level 1 job so i can breeze through the game. Who knows.
Posting then boomeranging back through the thread.
Honestly, I'm disappointed, but with high hopes.
I expected Final Fantasy 14 to be Rift with Final Fantasy classes, lore, and Square's innovation.
I haven't seen a smooth launch since Warcraft and I gave everyone else the benefit of the doubt due to their resources. Then Rift proves me wrong with a smooth launch, great interface, and content. The thing during launch that plagued Warcraft and currently Rift are server queues to get into the game.
Where my high hopes remain in Squenix is that they are listening to players on an international level. They aren't pulling an Aion where only Korean players input matters, Korean servers get a patch, and English players are an afterthought. Squenix wants to please both sides of the globe, and that touches me.
Yoshi-P and team, I want to see where this expedition leads them. I fear there is much pressure on them as Final Fantasy 13 was considered a flop to many critics (though I enjoyed it quite much).
Any further honesty I have on this topic is reserved at this time as I go up and start reading.
I enjoy playing very much, look forward to it everyday.
I don't have as much time as others to play, so I have no problem with content. Finishing 4 Fieldcraft, 4 Battle and 6~8 Local leves + Behests is usually more than I can fit in any 36 hour period. For me content is no issue.
The repair system was causing me trouble early on, due to the excessive amount of time I spent repairing. I feel it is mostly fixed now. The "Seek Repair" Icon works very well after you know how to use it.
Fatigue still ticks me off. I get maybe 1 or 2 days a month where I can play for 8~10 hours straight. On those days, I want to level my main ALL day. I really don't like having a game telling me not to play however I want. I call BS.
For 28 days of the month, FFXIV is the perfect game to play for just a few hours. Get some leves, craft a bit, Behest, run into a Leve party (this aspect is awesome, easy to find a pick up party due to the Leve Link system) and then it's time for bed.
Anyone else enjoy some Crafting + Netflix? Basically, there is content that only requires 1/2 of your attention, which is great if you have 4 kids and have to stop constantly.
Enjoying it so far. Can't wait to get to NM fights.
I enjoy it, although it needs a lot of work, and patience from the community while that work is done.
Since the servers have been down I've been giving Rift a try. Despite all the positive press and temporary popularity from the "Ooh, new! Shiny! Not WoW!" people, I have to say I think FFXIV is the better game.
Rift borrows elements from WoW (mostly), FFXIV, and Warhammer Online. For being brand new there's a TON of content and lore to discover, which is very good. But the UI itself is clunky. I can't explain how they did it. It's a carbon copy of the WoW UI, yet it isn't nearly as snappy. The graphics are dated, even compared to WoW. You don't get the level of character customization that XIV gives you. The races are boring. Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and something that looks like the blue people from Avatar without tails.
This is a quick and dirty critique, I know. Needless to say, I'll be returning to FFXIV as soon as SE brings the servers back online.
The game has come a long way since October, and it has some big changes to make before it gets where it needs to be. But I see potential for this game to become a far better game that FFXI ever was.
And I thought FFXI was fantastic.
I have been playing FFXIV since CE Launch. When the game started, it was awful. It was slow, bulky, and if I was playing without knowing anyone, I would've quit. The recent patches have helped a lot in making the game a lot more playable and enjoyable, but they still have a long ways to go. The foundation is good, and so long as any drastic changes they make do not effect progress, the game should really come together in a year or so.
I personally have stuck with this game since launch, and I have stuck up for it every chance I get. But there minor things that I am a little upset about: Chocobo's, Airships, and the LS system (really? I can't kick people who quit the game? GRR).
And then there is only one major thing that has me upset: A CHALLENGE. I'm really looking for a serious challenge in this game. Something I really have to group up for really fight hard to complete. Some may say NM's fulfill that hole, but the challenge has to have a reward that is equal to it's level of difficulty. I honestly feel the rewards for NM's is mediocre at best. And once you fight a few NM's, it becomes just a routine as leves.
I know SE has really big plans that will most likely make me very happy and will fulfill my urge for something difficult. And I am very excited to see what they come up with and will continue to advance in the game and assist my LS members in doing the same. Because honestly at the moment, my biggest challenge is trying to get people to continue to play, and not quit and "wait for more content." :(
