If you mean FFXI, then they were both dps. DRK was only a tank when you got a relic, and even then, only a few groups actually used them for that.

I played for a very long time but wasn't around to see DRK hit tank status...really?

They were usually dead on the floor after trying to pull out big deeps by hitting Soul Eater and stuff and making life extremely hard on Tanks and Healers xD
