I have just recently reached 51 on my AST, this is a class that I have been looking to play for a long time, but it has many flaws.
the card mechanics are designed well -SE did an amazing job with the cards and it is well thought out. It seems to me that in 4-man dungeons single buffs may be more useful than waiting for a royal road buff ( sometimes taking a gamble by spreading and royal roading at times can pay off too) and in 8-man dungeons a party wide buff is just too good to pass up.
The ast is like a "short burst" type of healer i.e. less potent but more frequent heals. Practically it doesn't work though - to match the healing output of the other healers you are almost casting two heals in the same amount of time as another healer would cast one, despite logic dictating otherwise (380 potency vs 400 potency). It is just not mp efficient. -

At level 50 both whm and sch have aoe damaging skills (bane, shadowflare, miasma II and holy) and ast only gets gravity at 52. This reduces the usefulness of ast in my eyes, sch or whm being able to cleric stance and do damage seems superior to being able to apply rng buffs.
When doing level 50 content, I struggled with ast more so than I initially thought I would. In 8 man content, If the other healer dies, you have no idea how difficult it makes it for ast - not to mention eating a huge chunk of mp trying to raise the healer. Ast just does not have the potent heals to bring a team back from the brink of death efficiently. -

To me AST looks very bland when you get down to it.
First.. The heals...
They are weaker.. they cost more MP... due to no way of getting reduced cost or free cures 2's.
They have stacking issues... AST dots don't stack with eachother (WTF SE, we went through this once already back in the day) and the shields don't stack with a SCH.
Overall an AST has subpar healing with bad efficiency for the tradeoff of being able to act like both classes and have RNG Buffs.

RNG... RNG...RNG... Ive got Ewer 7x times in a row..
The duration is to short on the buffs, in no way reliable. SCH Pet is Reliable.
It just seems like a lot of effort for a whole 1.5% raid buff for what ? 15 seconds ?
BOLE, save it back and have a clutch cooldown to help tank.. but.. SCH and WHM already do this with eyefor an eye..
The RNG factor makes it where when you need that buff... your not gonna get it.. even with a redraw.. The only good thing the cards have is you can store one.
They are going to need some help... but I can see why they would be left weak as they can act like both classes for healing. -

Would you guys say AST is proactive or reactive healing? I find it really hard to be proactive with my heals on WHM, as much as I love healing, just don't think I'm going to cut the mustard at end-game content, and highly unlikely I'm going to get any better :/

Get to level 57/58, go heal The Vault last boss and open your eyes people. Your lightspeed 'fast heals' which is on a 150sec cooldown ain't gonna cut it.
The party takes so much AOE damage (during last phase every 3-5 secs he AOES on top of smashing the tank) that what you need is raw healing/mitigation. At that point your priority is to keep everyone alive, not to have your fancy cards reduce TP cost. -

I find I keep comparing AST to my WHM wondering which skill is most similar to one on WHM so thinking why am I even playing a different role when I think WHM is perfect lol. Like do your draw, pull the Balance for example, but then do RR and in return for waiting another 45 seconds, you get the enhanced Balance, instead of throwing that card away in hopes for something better.
