Why do people feel a constant need to take what is said, turn it into a generalized statement out of context with what's actually being provided, and then throw it into the mix like nothing's changed? One should never go into randoms with the expectation to pass on gear that you may need/want for whatever reason. Even if I were to ask, I don't expect anyone to pass on gear. And if I lose the roll it's "C'est la vie. Better luck next time."

Nothing wrong with asking to pass; nothing wrong with refusing to do so. Neither party needs to justify their reasons. DF is a FFA; go with friends or go as the class that can hit the need button.
