Honestly it doesn't matter at this point what made players leave. It's all in the past. I highly doubt even over 10% of players left for the sole reason that they were expecting FFXI-2 it's just stupid to assume that but again it doesn't matter at this point.
What matters is that Yoshi-P has clear plans for the game most of which are incredible and he and his team are not slacking. They have already fixed a boat load of stuff and as time goes on it will only get better. A year or so from now(probably even sooner) The game will be way better off and most would not even think it to be the same game.(Mechanically speaking)
What needs to be discussed is how SE plans on getting the game off life support. Even if all the players still playing right now started paying I doubt it would make them a profit(After all Tanaka said that FFXI was running for nearly 4 years before it turned a profit and it had a far larger player base from the get go). The game is gonna need a relaunch of sorts.
Upon it's release it got alot of negative press but it has since pretty much stayed out of the main stream gaming news. Many have suspected that the PS3 version of the game will serve as the relaunch of the game which would make sense as they have delayed it until the PC version of up to snuff which means that the PS3 version will be a far more polished and balanced game right off the bat. That in turn should hopefully bring in some good reviews and get some new blood into the game. If not then well.... the game might be in serious trouble.
The game is getting fixed at this point....rapidly I might add so dwelling on what made players leave is pointless. What we need to do is worry if after everything is fixed if SE can get the game going again or if this is all exercise in futility.

Although I tried to don't want an XI-2, my inner expectations did want that (was that right english <.<?)
For me, XIV ist just in an additional beta and I'm sure that they will fix most of the problems. The official XIV Forum is one big step to let XIV become a great game. Just start judging the game when it's ready to demand monthly fees. -

FFXI 2 with updates would be fine with me, let me re say this, I like FFXIs mechanics as well as its beautiful landscapes that do not look the same for miles. Only thing i dont agree with is #6. Although I do not desire to be a mithra (Or whatever its called) i like being able to wear what i want when i want. If you want to wear gear too high and suffer the stat loss fine with me.
DOnt get me wrong, the graphics on this game are awsome, they just wasted them on copy/paste landscape. And i keep saying this but when camps and nodes inhabit every square inch of the entire world im wondering why there are any monsters left.
*Update* - Oh and i do have high hopes for the game. i see that SE is listening, i hope they just dont fall into the demands of all the lazy Wow players.... Aggro mob marks? really? pay attention and you wont have to get aggroed :p. -

He gave you quests... quest not good enough
he made the game have a bit of a smaller learning curve which makes less time to "learn" more time to play. And you guys scream for immersion but don't role play
he took out a game geature that could have been used to troll, and again you scream for immersion yet don't role play.
Will ffxiv be ever good enough for you guys? It will if you stop getting too high in expecting and just do wait and see.
Yoshi-p so far gave you guys stuff you been asking for. And some extras to make the game have a wider audience range . Quests didn't have epic 2 min cs so they are not good enough. They didn't reward sp so they not good enough.
When will side quests just for hunts of lore be good enough?
I think you guys are to used to your established mmo to play new ones. -

I think this is a thread meant to just stir up people for debates that help nothing. I do agree that they could have learned from FFXI took some ideas and enhanced them but overall it doesn't matter what JUST us vets have to say. It really comes down to what every Good MMO try to do(and not just some WoW cloners) and pull in the widest range of players while keeping a unique and epic experience. Simply put to achieve this is OPTIONS, CONTENT, and IMMERSION. making a ffxi-2 would achieve nothing but instead just transfer the ones that still play into this one. Few new players would join. Causals DO play a role in MMOs as well as Hardcores. Games with just either or will be lacking skill or the welcoming of new players.
edit: I'm a strong believer this game will pull through whichever choice the new team chooses except the choice of making it a ffxi-2(which from reading seems like this isn't a option for them).
edit2: by IMMERSION i don't mean the "Aggro Icon" debate crap but making the players actually care about what they are doing and why they are doing it. -

1 easier said then done when you got limited time to play.
2 making this game less overwheling is a good thing.
3 you still need to figure out how it aggros and how to avoid it. All the icon just tell you it aggros.
remember not all mobs aggro the same, or not as obvious. Remember sand bats in ffxi? who pictured them aggroing first time seeing them? I didn't. -
