Physical distance =/= network distance.
Until you've checked your routing and ping, don't assume that the two are related.
You can have a physically nearby network destination that has a roundabout routing (due to peering, contracts, ISP etc) that's slow, but a physically far away location can be responsive, due to being 'next door' on the network (also due to the same: peering agreements, backbone contracts, how your ISP is wired, etc)
