Yeah I agree lol. Funny thing was I didn't really care that much about this system up until these last few mins. I was like "eh, neat idea, good for some, dunno if I'll ever do it" but now I'm actually excited for it, and it's good to see some sensible people among the myriad party poopers who don't want to have anything to do with it.

No. This is SSM in a game, I'm not talking about real life so take your bs "human rights" argument and stick it where the sun doesn't shine. I'm here to talking about FF14. I don't care what anyone sexual preference is, it has no effect on me. The only thing I do think is wrong is throwing tantrums over this not immediately being implemented just to please people who want their pixels to marry another set of pixels(no effect on gameplay or the effectiveness of your character but whatever) and with no regard to people in other countries where this is not allowed. This is why I really like the Soul partner idea, everyone is happy.

How shallow and absurd.

If the opposite sex can do it, the same sex should be able to do it. Real life or in game. To deny that right is in poor taste, especially in this era of online games where I will say yet again this game's competition is doing it and to not follow suit is going to irk quite a few people. It is bad business practice, and the argument of "world wide audience" has been eliminated because the competition also has a world wide audience.

I find it cute when people bring up the argument "stop bringing real life into Final Fantasy XIV" and then immediately follow up with "some countries do not allow same sex marriage have respect for them". This has happened what, at least three times in this thread now?

If people don't want to bring real life into FFXIV the answer is obvious and without question to implement it because Eorzea's take on things is obviously leaning towards equality. End of that argument.

So "basic human rights" is bs, but the "regard for people in other countries where this is not allowed" isn't?

My country doesn't allow prostitution, where is our representation in SE's fantasy game?

Or do countries not matter in the lore of a fictional work?

Maybe the players and their choices of various avatars not being so cut and dry matter more.

I voted for same gender marriage, even though I would never do it I think it's important to allow others to live their lives how they wish. It is not my place to make people follow my beliefs, certainly not in a game that is meant to be fun for all.

Oh wow, Zantetsuken, you've been busy since I posted last night. I don't believe you responded to my response, but I'm happy that at least you're not trying to tout the Marks and Regnerus studies anymore.

Now, it seems we've moved on from the IRL marriage discussion, but I'd like to address this real quick...

While this is technically true, it misses the point entirely. When people talk about social equality, it's not the same as saying two groups are identical, it's saying that whatever differences they have as people aren't important enough to treat them differently. For example, you can point out that black people and white people have different skin color, but that hardly has anything to do with whether or not they should be able to vote, does it?

Whatever you seem to think marriage was about back then, it isn't that way now. Whether or not marriages were strictly for those who could procreate with their spouse isn't part of the question in modern times. Today it's no longer about arrangement, but the autonomy to choose who you want to start a family with, and if society thought at any time that you couldn't possibly do it unless the two people in question could procreate with each other, they'd have long ago banned infertile couples, elderly couples, and couples who want to adopt instead.

To make an argument against gay marriage for the fact that people of the same gender cannot procreate is to make a case for banning straight couples who also cannot procreate, and nothing in US law (to my knowledge) has ever banned someone from marriage for that reason.

Marriage has changed multiple times in American history alone, not to mention the changes it's gone through throughout history and throughout the different civilizations. From women becoming people and not property, to blacks being allowed to marry each other, to being able to marry someone of a different race, marriage has definitely not stayed the same for as long as some people would like you to believe.

That aside, making an argument from tradition is a tricky thing to do. Legally courts tend to lean toward tradition, should all else be equal, but in order for that to happen, all else has to be equal. You can't come in with an argument from tradition as your only defense and expect it to stand up against the arguments that gay couples should be allowed the same rights as other couples who cannot have children with each other. It just won't work.

They do, but often because they're misinformed. It used to be that people thought that gays were all pedophiles, when in fact the vast majority of pedophiles who molest children of the same sex are also attracted to adult women, and not adult men.

Yes, others will disagree, but that doesn't mean they're reasons for doing so are justified.

I really hope they go with the "Soul Partner" idea someone else proposed. That really does seem to be the only way of addressing this that everyone can agree with and that doesn't conflict with the fact that some people play this in countries where SSM is banned.

People are just disagreeing on it because they think it effects them when it doesn't. Especially in a video-game. Homosexuals should be able to marry in-game with no problem if it makes them happy.

Offsprings don't matter. People get married all the time never having kids, so what does it matter if homosexual people want to be betrothed.

I have a lesbian aunt, she deserves to be happy, just like people in a game should be able to have the same choice as everyone else who can marry.

ITT: People who have nothing better to do but argue over nothing important.
