o.O Overkill on the crafting Dumb down?

Abolishing of Parts does sound extreme but I hope that what they really mean is Condensing of parts, for example:

Animal Glue
Fish Glue
Horn Glue
Wing Glue
Scale Glue
Void Glue

How many freakin' types of glue do we really need? 1 Glue should suffice for all crafts with maybe +1, +2, +3 glues required for higher level synths.

The glue example is repeated many, many times in the current recipes and just need to be condensed, not abolished.

Well glue is not a part, it is a material, but yeah I agree exactly with what you are saying. It should just be condensed not scrapped.

TL;DR version:
Complex recipes with imbalanced levels do have one upside -- they can provide a good opportunity to meet and possibly befriend new people.

A short story from just one hour ago on Saronia...

One of our LS members reached Lancer Rank 30 and wanted a new iron lance.

None were for sale in the market wards, so she asked in LS chat. Two of us took on the project and started making parts for the lance.

Everything went okay... except for the lance head. To make a R30 lancer's weapon requires a R43 blacksmith recipe weapon head that no LS members online at the time could make.

So we went in search of someone who could make the lance head (since it wasn't available in the market wards either).

My crafter friend went to ask one of his friends in a different LS. They were all very helpful and encouraging, but unfortunately not quite high enough to make the lance head.

Still, I got to meet some people I hadn't spoken with before, and have possibly made some new friends there. ^^

No lance head yet, so next I turned to my other LS and found someone who was able to make the lance head for us.

All parts now in hand, I was able to make the lance for my LS friend... and I was sure to tell her who had made the lance head for us. In appreciation, she sent a /tell and perhaps a new friendship was born there too.

It would have been a lot easier if the recipe required no parts and no sub-jobs -- just something like:

15x iron nuggets
1x cedar log
1x glue
1x buffalo leather
= iron lance

And I guess that would be nice for people who just want the item with minimal fuss.

But if SE built this system to encourage the creation of a supportive community, this morning demonstrated it very well.

true, that was a nice story, and I think that was the original intent of the crafting system design, and it still can be with the changes, at higher levels anyway.

If you had to press less buttons on a remote control to get to the channel you want, that wouldn't be dumbing anything down. It's making something faster/more convenient. Same thing for crafting.

I can't wait to see how SE intends to make crafting more difficult at higher ranks. Should be interesting.

the removing of a few items wouldn't = dumbing down it'd = streamlining, removing of the whole parts system amd more importantly the need for a subcraft (the random inbalance in mats is what needs to be sorted) does = dumbing down.

their also removing GM's too but they have said this will be reviewed for a better way to implment it, least thats how i read it.

I'm glad they are making crafting easier. When this happens, I'll feel like I can actually make cool stuff, whereas now, I don't ever have the motivation to craft anything because there's a billion steps to take just to make one simple thing. I mean, I know they wanted to make it realistic and everything, but if you want realism in making a piece of clothing in the game, then just go make a real piece of clothing irl! Being able to make cool gear makes you feel powerful (in that sense), just like being able to kill all kinds of monsters makes you feel powerful. Crafting finished equipment and weapons makes you feel very accomplished, and dumbing it down for us players will make more people motivated to actually sit down and craft stuff (myself included).

Right now, I only make earrings and stuff because it takes 20 damn steps just to make a weapon for myself! And also having to go through every single crafting class just to make the different materials needed. That shouldn't be necessary in a game, it just makes me feel hopeless and give up crafting altogether.

I loved the idea of sub-crafts. It would be nice to see them stay as is.
But SE says changes are coming. We'll see what we get. If people don't like it, perhaps SE will change some things back.

This is going to help Linkshells and friends be able to help eachother out without having to go out and search the heavens for parts or mats for a item to just ""HELP"" a friend or stranger out so they can progress in the game!
