IMO its even better to make the autolog optional.

Let's counter that:
WoW (2004 - current) - has an afk kick
Aion (2009 - current) - has an afk kick
Tera (2011 - current) - has an afk kick
Rift (2011 - current) - has an afk kick
SWtor (2011 - current) - has an afk kick
So yes....the norm in massive MMO these days is having an auto-afk kick.
Sure, those game you list had no afk kick, but also had no where near the ammount of players MMOs today have (because MMO were not as masive as they are now)
I don't understand why people are upset about an auto kick. How hard is it to log back on?! And yes like the guy above me posted, it is the norm.
*Is wondering if the OP, or anyone else who doesn't support an auto logout have ever played an MMO before.*
Agian that goes completely against the point of the afk system, its not there just for fun there is a reason for it.
To be fair increasing the time would an alright idea, then no one can complain because it wont affect DF hardly because most people get a group whiten the hour :), but i would say no more than that.
This is one of those things that if they had it when the game launched, nobody would complain even if it was months after game release. But since it's being added NOW rather than BEFORE people have already gotten used being lazy and thinking that AFKing in a game where there are people waiting is their only way to play.
With the new AFK system I'm sure that getting back in is no harder than spamming 0 on your num pad to try to get it in. People just like to bitch about something because they've already conditioned their tiny brains to do something else. You don't even have to type your password, you just have to hit the start button and it takes you to your character screen. So people complaining about that obviously haven't been afk timed out. NO PASSWORD RETYPING. So those people griping have literally not had it happen to them, they're just complaining for the sake of complaining.
Totally ruins the immersion of my character moonlighting as a street actor playing the part of a living statue at the Aetheryte crystal.
Seriously though, I'm glad they finally added this. Not that hard to log back in any more.
I can't even begin to think of the amount of laziness it must require to complain about taking two clicks to get back into the game. Unless the game booted you while you were spending half at hour reading someone in game and it saw that as AFK, then I'm not sure what people are complaining about.
Having it on by default. Most people would probably not turn it off. I admit that my "free gameplay style" comes from playing FFXI and FFXIV 1.0. It might feel good anyway if they increase the time to 1+ hour. But for me it was very surprising that SE actually implemented this. And im one of those who log out when going to work or when i sleep. Just find it a bit annoying during the day to not be able to follow things that comes up in LS/FC or whatever, because of also doing things irl back and forth.
I absolutely love this feature. you can argue it all you want but if your afk to eat, poop, feed your baby, working out, at work, SLEEPING, or whatever the case me be and its more than 20min or whatever the criteria is you need to be logged out so it does not impead any one else who would like to log into the game or even join a full world for that matter.
IDC if you pay 100 a day to play if your afk your logged out.... why should others have to wait on you!!
can you please tell me all the mmo you have played? I really am curious, all the ones i played did have it.
Thank you for the answer. I guess I can sort of understand why you want to see the LS chat, it's just not something that ever occurred to me.
Regarding your right to stay logged in because you're paying, I do still have to disagree with that way of thinking. I just think that it's similar to remaining in a crowded restaurant for hours, talking to your friends, but preventing others from eating just because you've paid to be there. If the restaurant was empty, or didn't have a waiting line, it would be different; but with crowds lining up to try to get space, I just can't be that discourteous. *shrug*
As someone who has spent an hour trying to log on with 1017 errors, I am in favor of an auto-log out feature. I am loving thi game, but I'm not interested in payer for a game I can't play when I want. My playtime is limited so losing it to 1017 hurts.
I'm amazed by the number of people that are bothered by the auto log out. If having to remember to tab in and move for half a second every 15-30 minutes is a hardship for you or you're afraid you won't be able to remember too... wow. Do you need SE to send you a facebook or text message that your dungeon is ready?
Is it really uncommon to queue for a dungeon (when I feel like going dps) ... and then switching jobs to be productive while I wait? I can mine, log or level a battle class, work on crafting or just sit and chat with friends.
I'm curious if anyone would complain about this feature if it had even noticed if this feature had been a default feature since launch.

So what? The whole purpose of why the auto log out got implemented currently is because large numbers of AFK players were preventing others from being able to play in the first place. Objectively, is any one person's sub fee more important than any other? No it is not, but when you have the problem of people not being able to play due to more players than expected being made worse by people logged in and not playing for prolonged periods of time, an auto-kick is needed to make it so the majority has a chance to actually play instead of the minority monopolizing the available slots. When the digital sales get re-implemented, and if there is not massive congestion I can see this being relaxed or even eliminated, but until the games population becomes stable and is not growing at a fast rate the AFK boot needs to stay.
Auto Kick is easily defeated without running into walls (since of course auto run doesn't defeat it) so no need to report someone running into a wall. No third party tools are needed none of that sort. I will report those using bots however. I'll continue to afk for as long as I see fit until they increase the 30 minute margain.
It's always somewhat funny when someone tries to put their foot down like this. This is a video game, a GAME, I hope everyone is aware of this. This isn't a job, or a raffle to get a car, or buying a house and dealing with the builder, this is a video game. You guys are all "I'm gonna do this as long as I see fit till SE gives me what I want, waaaaah"....honestly, it's literally nauseating that this is what people find the time to complain about....really sad stuff.
I'm really dreading what I'm about to say, honestly, because I hate the "stop acting like 12 year olds" comments. But you guys literally sound like kids....my daughter throws tantrums that are around the same as what you guys are doing. Screaming so she can get her way or trying to test me (neither of which work I might add), people here are literally doing the same thing towards SE.
I only have two words for this type of behavior.
Grow up.
in what way is logging back in after 30+ minutes of complete inactivity unacceptable?
I'm willing to listen but "just because" is not really an answer. Logging back in is super fast now with the server upgrades so that's no issue
The AFK kick doesn't seem to work so well anyway.
I started farming diremite webs in the North shroud yesterday and there was an AFK THM next to my usual farming spot. Ive been farming for 3 hours, that guy didn't disappear ( log out ) nor moved a toe.
Later that day i came back to farm couple more hours... That guy was still there at the exact same spot and once again didn't move at all or been logged out all the time i was farming. I actually bet that if i go to my spot right now he would still be there.
irrelevant statement, the argument to support that auto kick should not be "because every mmo ive played has it" when i can list several sub based ones that do not. Right off the top of my head? ffxi and lineage 2(before f2p of course).
I'm sorry but what point are you trying to make?
Keep the afk kicker. I don't know why you would even want to remove it in the first place.
We should disable retainers when we're not logged in since that eats up resources and we're not actually playing so...
1) People saying "It's the reason the servers were screwed up near launch" are ridiculous. It was a byproduct not the cause.
2) What is done with a person's account should be completely up to them. If they want to afk with their paid subscription, no one has the right to tell them they can't (ESPECIALLY when it doesn't affect them, which it doesn't).
3) There's no record of a chat log. Once you logout (or are forced to), it's gone.
4) There's no record of a sales log. Once you logout (or are forced to), it's gone. I don't want to waste time going back to town to check if any of my stuff has sold only to find out it hasn't when I'm trying to move a large amount of stuff out after a crafting spree. I want to be free to go do something else for a bit, go afk when I need to, to break things up a bit if need be but be able to come back and continue doing whatever it was without worrying about whether something sold while i was gone (and got auto kicked).
5) The server login issues are (mostly) resolved, this "feature" is over a week late and no longer relevant. Especially as a pacifier for the people who "whined" about it when they couldn't login.
6) Getting auto kicked puts you back at the start menu. If you're afk, that means that start screen video is going to play, which is a lot more load-heavy on a graphics card over an unpopulated area in-game (such as an inn room). This is bad if you are unexpectedly gone for a few hours.
I could go on but I feel I've wasted my time because the trolls are going to be like "you could just logout!" or "you eat server resources!" and just ignore perfectly valid points or nitpick (falsely at that).
Please no. i want to keep the stuff i sell available for people 24/7 as it is now.
Most of time one of my items sells is when im logged out. I have a small gil income ( 15k per day ) don't cut the opportunity to get this daily income from lvl50 "day & night" crafters because im off when they need the item i would have been able to sell them if i was in.
I think 30 mins its too short, 1 hour would be great. This feature its great to help servers to avoid "queques" or crash due high trafic.
Reading people complain about this its a joke, oh wait i wanted to say 6 hour in the roof of some building or siting in a table?.
I think what many people are missing is that many endgame events take hours to set up, sometimes more. Communication is vital during those times. Most people are not going to stare at the screen for 2 hours while a guild raid ( or whatever ff14 endgame has in store ) gets setup. Running back to the comp to hit the space bar every 20 minutes... is fairly retarded. Also if the endgame events end up anything like ff11 ... 2 hours for group setup would be nothing. Imagine trying to organize a saturday dyna run with a 30 min logout feature.. lol :)
Why, this is what the majority wanted, and I love it.
Or just move every so often. This kind of feature isn't uncommon in an mmo and it's what the forums were crying for before, you got what you wanted.
I guess people are just that obsessed with complaining or something. No doubt when any kind of extension is added or the feature is removed altogether(god forbid) there will be another topic just like this, just going on about something different.
