Minfilia refrences "Krile" (the name of a FFV char) in the last scene of the 2.1 main storyline IIRC.
In the first post it mentions Umaro is in XIV? Where?
Final Fantasy 7:
The bar in Revanant's Toll where the Scions new base is located is called "Seventh Heaven." Also, as in FF7, the bar holds a secret base.
Enemies from Binding Coil of Bahamut turn 4 - Clockwork soldiers/knights use the same model as enemies from ff13 Pulsework soldiers/knights, same goes for Clockwork Dreadnoughts.
Name of the head of Goldsmith guild - Serendipity is the name of casino from FF-13-2
As I was 90k'ing with impending server patch coming up, I realized that Coil Turn 4 takes place in the "Ragnarok Drive Cylinder," which seems like an FFVIII reference.
While they are indeed the same, I am not entirely sure it is a reference. Serendipity is an existing word, and it matches her personality pretty well. Also, Serendipity (the casino) is called ザナドゥ (Xanadu) in the Japanese version :/
Death penalty is also the name of Vincent valentines weapon from FF7. Also Squall's from FF8 facial scar is an option for hyur mid landers.
not sure if people mentioned this
the seventh heaven in revnants toll is named after the one in FF7 it also has a "secret base" though without the lift that goes down
The current FFXI-crossover event 'Burgeoning Dread' naturally features a ton of references and in-jokes to, FFXI: :p (Possible spoilers for those who haven't done the event yet)
The FFXI crossover event in ARR revolves around Shantotto, a tarutaru BLM and the former Minister for the Orastery, one of the five ministries of magic, in the Federation of Windurst in FFXI.
Instead of the usual ARR style font for the 'quest accepted/completed, FATE Joined/Complete' titles, the FFXI event quest instead uses the actual FFXI game logo and traditional FF font.
The FFXI crossover event is both started and completed in Gridania, a similar nation to Windurst where Shantotto hails from (a nation of mages who revere nature).
The sound effect that plays upon completing both the second Shantotto FATE 'Tower of Power' and the actual quest itself, is the short fanfare (arranged by Naoshi Mizuta), that plays in FFXI when a player completes a quest.
The battle theme for the second Shantotto FATE 'Tower of Power' is Feast of the Ladies by Naoshi Mizuta, the final boss theme against Domina Shantotto and Belle Shantotto from the FFXI A Shantotto Ascension mini-expansion.
Shantotto uses traditional powerful (tier IV) FFXI black magic spells that aren't available to the player in FFXIV, such as Firaga V, Blizzaga V, Tornado II and Gravity II in her FATE 'Tower of Power.'
One of Shantotto's attacks in 'Tower of Power' is 'Play Rough', the name of her EX Burst attack in Dissidia Final Fantasy and Dissidia Duodecium 012 Final Fantasy.
The weapon Shantotto wields in battle in Tower of Power is the Fire Staff, a level 51 weapon in FFXI available to all mage jobs - Shantotto also wielded this weapon in her Dissidia appearances.
The equipment Shantotto is wearing is Tactician Magican's gear, level 50ish 'Conquest' mage gear for Windurst that is available to players in FFXI (it's the same outfit she actually wears in FFXI)
During the end cutscene for the FFXI event, the giant Shantotto that the player fought is revealed to be nothing but a doll that the real Shantotto had magically enlarged - this is a reference to a special event battle in FFXI where the player can fight various female NPCs, including Shantotto. Shantotto's appearance in that event was revealed to actually have been a doll that the real Shantotto was controlling (this is also referenced in Dissidia).
During the end cutscene for the FFXI event, Shantotto mentions she comes from "The Federation of Windurst in the world of Vana'diel", which is indeed her home town and the name of the world of FFXI.
During the end cutscene for the FFXI event, Shantotto name drops the title for the FFXI mini-expansion that she has a staring role in, A Shantotto Ascension, the plot for which dealt with Shantotto accidentally casting a transdimensional spell which sends her across dimensions and starts the expansion's storyline that she also references in the cutscene as to the means of how she arrived in Hydaelyn. Her eyes even glow red momentarily like the 'Shantotto clones' in that expansion.
There's probably more, but this is everything I picked up on (as a FFXI player for over 9 years now). :)
Probably mentioned already- isn't Atomos the Gaping Maw from XI?
Atomos is from various FF games I believe. For instance, the image below was from FFIX (He was a summons).
http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/s...Fantasy_IX.jpg
- The music that plays in the zombie fate in S. Thanalan is a remix of the battle theme from FFII.
- There is a Kain gardening around the Sanctum of the Twelve. (FF4) Oddly enough, in 1.0, Kain was sitting in the leatherworkers guild making boots and sometimes smacking his shoulder with his hammer. o_O
- Ricard is seen drinking inside Buscaron's Druthers. (FF2)
- The airship company is called Highwind Airways which is a direct reference to all the known Highwinds in the series, including Kain, Ricard, and Cid.
There are others that have jumped at me from time to time. If I remember what they were, I'll come back for more.
Not really a reference but back story on some of the game references to both FF series and FFXIV.
Cait Sith (Pronounced like 'caught she') translates from Irish to Cat Fairy. Cait, being cat and Sith coming from a fairy like creature (a banshee). [source]
Those for ever sought after ponies of the extremes (Can't quite remember the full story but people can google these if they wish.):
Enbarr - Comes from Irish mythology yet again, was a horse belonging to Niamh, Queen of Tír Na Nog [source]
Gullfaxi - From Norse mythology, a horse belonging to Hungnir who was killed and had the horse taken by Thor. Odin, who wanted the horse expected it as a gift but rather, it was given to Magni. The horse was second only to Sleipnir, the horse of Odin. [source]
Xanthos - A city from Ancient Lycia. [source]
Aithon - One of four horses of the Greek God Ares, god of war, which drew his chariot. [source] [Also thanks to HakuroDK]
Weapons:
Gae Bolg - Another from Irish culture, it was a spear used by Cúchulainn. It also appeared in The Last Remnant. [source]
Other:
Aiatar - This dragon from Brayflox Longstop comes from Finish mythology. An evil spirit said to take the form of a snake or dragon and spread disease. [source] Also has several different spellings. [source]
I don't know my mythology inside out, I just looked some of these things up as I came across them in game and found the mythology behind them. The horses in particular after reading Enbarr's name and assuming it's relation to Irish as "Barr" translates to "Top". However, Enbarr translates to Imagination (consult the source).
Ares was the God of War and Patron Deity of Sparta. Guns didn't exist back then. Also, it is possible that the chariot being referred to belongs to Apollo, God of the Sun, who had his golden chariot drawn by horses in an eternal chase against his twin sister Artemis, Goddess of the Moon and the Hunt.
I think your source is kinda flawed with its information. Not trying to insult you or your sources, just adding clarity from my own knowledge. I'm kind of a Greek Mythology buff. I don't claim to know everything, but I know a good amount.
Sorry to cast Raise on this thread, but given some new FF series fanservice references have surfaced in 2.3, I felt it was worth reviving. :D (Spoilered for those who have not yet undertaken 2.3 content)
FFIII
- The second part of the Crystal Tower, Syrcus Tower, fittingly features boss enemies from FFIII's Crystal Tower, although some have been renamed, such as Scylla, Amon (Hein in FFIII) and Xande.
- Unei and Doga, the clones of long dead Allagan sorcerers in the Syrcus Tower story line, are of course based on the sages Unei and Doga from FFIII
- The group of researchers investigating the Crystal Tower is called NOAH, possibly referring to the famous magus of the same name from FFIII
- The background theme music for Syrcus Tower is a remix (by Masayoshi Soken), of Nobuo Uematsu's Crystal Tower, the theme for the eponymous final dungeon in FFIII.
- The Onion Knight minion directly references the Onion Knight Job in FFIII (right down to emulating the NES-era sprite model, much like the Minions of Light)
FFVI
- although he's not yet in the game, the 'stinger' cutscene after completing the new Hildibrand quest line shows that Ultros from FFVI will be coming to the game in the future as part of a future set of Hildibrand quests - fittingly in Ul'dah's Colosseum.
FFVII
- in the new Minion Guide, for the Cait Sith Doll, highlighting the minion's image brings up a speech bubble that directly quotes Cait Sith from FFVII.
Jessie, one of the members of Avalanche in FFVII, appears as a high-ranking member of the Garlond Ironworks during the quest to repair your magitek armour's weapon systems.
FFIX
- the new moogle mail delivery quests are similar to the Mognet quest line in FFIX where the player had to deliver mail on behalf of the moogles.
FFXII
- the Mandragora Royalty bosses feature in the new Hildibrand quest line as antagonists - they also feature in their own FATE on the Isle of Umbra.
The new Hunt system is very closely based on the Hunt from FFXII.
There's probably more, but these are some of the new references I've discovered so far. :D
Sorry to necropost but I've been looking through music references and I've found that some sound very familiar but weren't listed anywhere that I could find and would like to add to the list when I can. I didn't want to start a new thread since this list is already pretty extensive. If anyone else caught any music callbacks to earlier games in the franchise, I'd love to see them.
Here's the one I found recently. The music that plays during the airship cutscene when you're first able to board the airship is the same (albeit more fully orchestrated) song as the FFVIII ending theme.
FFXIV Airship Theme
FFVII Ending Theme
That's already been mentioned - that track is the 'Final Fantasy' theme that appears in one form or another in pretty much every FF title (except FFII and FFXIII), usually either at the start of the game or the ending. It actually first appeared in the very first FF game on the NES in 1987 when the player first crossed the bridge out of Corneria, so it's definitely far older than FFVII. ;)
Also there were actually two versions of this track appearing in FFXIV - the 'original' version was by Nobuo Uematsu from the version 1.0 OST and was known as Opening Theme on the FFXIV 1.0 OST album such as Before Meteor (in FFXIV 1.0 it played on the character creation screen, and in FFXIV ARR it plays at the very end in the ending credits, during the listing of Legacy Campaign players). As well, there is also the 'new' version you mentioned which was remixed by Masayoshi Soken for ARR, known as A World Apart on the FFXIV ARR OST album.
Wind currents in Snowcloak looks like a reference to those in FF9's Ice Cavern.
You mean this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq3nJb5SW9I
Woops! And that hyperlink was suppose to say FFVIII, not FFVII. I haven't played the earlier FF games since I was a child so my memory of the music in them is pretty shoddy. I'll keep an ear out for any others, though, as I think there may be more that we're missing.
FF - The tank gear from CT is the same armor the warrior of light wears in cutscenes and Dissidia/Duodecim.
Correction: The pre-order cait sith doll isn't an homage to FF7's caith sith, it's to FFXI's
Technically Cait Sith predates even FFVII though - he first appeared in FFVI under the Woosleyism 'Stray' - also whereabouts does the minion reference Cait Sith's FFXI version? The Minion Guide description actually references Cait Sith's Gaelic mythology origins, and the minion's 'quote' is a direct reference to FFVII (it's a quote made by Cait Sith 'Number 2' on the Highwind at the end of disc 2). Apart from the minion being referred to in the feminine like the FFXI version, all signs point to the Cait Sith Doll referencing FFVII's incarnation.
A recent reference that is clearly from FFXI though, is during the quest to unlock the NIN Job, the player is told to give a password to the guard on duty outside the dock warehouse in Raincatcher Gully - the guard gives the word 'Ayame', and the correct password is 'Kaede' - Ayame and Kaede were two characters from FFXI (they were actually sisters). Ayame was a member of Bastok's Mythril Musketeers, although she was actually a Samurai and not a Ninja by Job (Kaede is a child though, so thus naturally hasn't trained in martial arts), but they were both fittingly involved in FFXI's NIN Job quest. I chuckled when I saw that and immediately picked up on the reference. :)
The boss Tyrant in Pharos Sirius is also a boss in FFXII, guarding the entrance to the great crystal in Giruvegan.
They both use the same model and are both very short fights.
It's appearance is closest to FFXI's version

When they say "Enterprise...Engage!" I thought the Enterprise was a Star Trek ref.
FF8 ending cutscene :D

This is when Laguna put the ring on her hand, then after they both held their hands up like they do in the Eternal Bond ceremony. I would think this counts as a ref...I hope.
Its Not a Final Fantasy reference, but a Drakengard reference(Drakengard being made by Square). The Second boss of The Lost City of Amdapor is named Arioch. Based off the Side-character from Drakengard. Arioch in Drakengard was an elf woman who's family(husband and children) had been murdered and so she went crazy and started killing people(and children/devouring the children). Seeing as how when you kill Arioch's children in The lost City, and then she attacks you, I assume its a reference... >.>
Arioch (Hebrew: אַמְרָפֶ֣ל ’Aryōḵ) is a Hebrew name that means "fierce lion". It originally appears in the Book of Genesis chapter 14 as the name of the "King of Ellasar", part of the confederation of kings who did battle with the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah and with Abraham in the Battle of the Vale of Siddim. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arioch
So nah.. I don't think it's a Drakengard reference at all in this case.
I notice a lot of references, here it one about music.

Hidden for possible 2.55 spoiler.
I hope at some point in Heavensward we get a quest to run around a heavily populated area yelling, "I AM FLAME GENERAL RAUBAHN ALDYNN OF UL'DAH!" and "DON'T LISTEN TO LOLORITO'S LIES!"
Something to put in the list is that when you finally finish your Zodiac Zeta, a re-arranged version of the key item fanfare of Final Fantasy 1 plays.
Hey guys, it's been a looooooong time since I've updated this thread. I'm actually really surprised it stayed as active as it did! I've gone through the original post and edited it. Mostly I just fixed typos and changed wording of things to reflect game changes (like talking about Gold Saucer as it is rather than what it might be in a future patch because it wasn't out yet). Over the next week I'm going to go through every single page in this thread and make a list of everything suggested that I don't already have on the first post. I'll try to credit everyone. If you guys have any more suggestions now is the best time to make them!
I'd like to point out real quick though that this thread is for references made in A Realm Reborn specifically to any other game in the Final Fantasy series. References to pop culture, other video games, movies, music, etc will not make the list because that is not what this list is for. Thanks, guys! :)
EDIT: Another quick note: I'm 100% sure the cait sith doll minion is a reference to FF7, not FF6, 10 or 11. This is reinforced by the minion's description being a quote from FF7. However, in my opinion, it's appearance most closely resembles Lulu's doll in FF10, so I've added a note to the reference to reflect that.
The boss from The Lost City of Amdapor is Diabolos, appears in Final Fantasy VI and VIII
Altho its entrance is more resembling to the Final Fantasy VIII version.
GF Diabolos FF VIII
Diabolos entrance FF XIV
Several enemies from The Binding Coil of Bahamut, Turn 4, are modeled after automaton enemies from Final Fantasy XIII. Some even appear in the Syrcus Tower.
Pulsework Soldier
Dreadnought

Notes:
1. I am being picky when it comes to game mechanics as references. In the first post I note under Final Fantasy 12 that the two games share a game designer, which means they have a lot of common mechanics (like the dotted lines between zones). I do not consider these references, but rather the mark of a common designer.
2. Once again, I'm trying to keep this list strictly about references to other final fantasy games. So I did not include references to other games, even other square games like Chrono Trigger.
3. Music found in most Final Fantasy games, like the Final Fantasy theme (usually called Prologue or Title), are simply part of the final fantasy feel as talked about at the beginning of the post. They will not get individual references.
4. I did not include a reference to "Serendipity" because I don't really consider it a reference. The character and the theme park from FF13 have nothing in common.
