Oh we're doing Chocobo names, too? Mine is Kweth, another nod to Dragonriders of Pern. All dragons have "th" at the end of their name. All I had to do was add "t" to "Kweh" and it was perfect.

Hrmmm, Hidalgo is my chocobo's name, named after the horse in the movie with it's namesake. Hidalgo was a mustang that won an Arabian horse race reserved for only the finest horses. Hidalgo and his owner(partner) were scoffed at as if they were a flee bitten nag ridden by a drunkard gauche American which wasn't far from the truth but what is on the outside doesn't matter nearly as much as what you have inside. The two won my heart in the movie thus my trusty steed "Hidalgo".
Never named the goobue.
My two retainers are named Mahal which means love in Tagalog (I'm Pinay, Filipina for people that don't know what Pinay means) and my other retainer is Pekpek which is vulgar Tagalog and I cannot translate on this forum :P
My Husband actually played Lapulapu when she was first created but he quit so I play her now and for a year now.
Lapulapu is considered to be the first Filipino hero and was a great warrior, tribal leader and was credited with killing Magellan the Spanish explorer. My husband named her and it kind of surprised me that he even knew about Lapulapu. I also think the name in modern context sounds kinda cute and fits the character's personality even though her namesake is a real tuff guy.
So there's the full story behind all my names. Kinda copped out on explanation earlier by linking wiki which only gives the meaning and not the personal story which this makes this thread fun.
I just named my chicken "Toronado" after Zorro's horse.
My chocobo is named Biscuit because Thanksgiving was too long.
Both my retainer's names are twists of my wife's name in real life.
EDIT: I took a class in Filipino Studies and have Filipino family. I figured out your name of Lapulapu awhile ago. I've used the few Tagalog words I know to pick up Filipina for many years. I still love calling Filipina, Bobo as a pet name and their face when they realize I know what it means. Then I generally swap to calling them maganda after that.
I miss my Aunt's pancit and chicken adobo... it was so yummy.
Chocobo name: Badgley - No particular reason other than I like how it sounds when you pronounce it (I wanted it to be Sir Badgley, before we knew whether our Chocobos can have both a first and a last name like our chars).
Gobbue name: Helga - She's big, ugly andproudoblivious, and I luv her.
My chocobo is named Bill. I named him after my grandad's dog who died some years ago. Not much else to really say about that other than it was to carry on his memory in some way. My retainer was named Abigail after our youngest cat. My path NPC was named Tabitha after our cat who passed away a couple years ago.
I just really love putting our pets in game one way or another.
Katti = Finnish for cat (or kitty rather)
Karvatassu = Finnish meaning Furrypaw
My boyfriend has a character called Otso Karvatassu
Otso = From Finnish mythology, a bear - spirit of the forest
So in English we would be (roughly): Kitty and Bear Furrypaw :D
Gennario Veltaine (also called Genn Jenn by many) was pretty much a rabbit from the hat
Gennario was based on a friends name on facebok (Gennaro)
Veltaine, i just flowed out somehow, the two kinda rang, Gennario Veltaine. my previous name was Tolbari Zhei, i felt i needed the change for the new world :) and it may change again come 2.0 ;)
My character's name (Millerna Astor) is from Visions of Escaflowne, which for the longest time was my favorite anime (and still holds the number 2 spot, after Kimi ga Nozomu Eien). I did alter the last name slightly, as I never liked Aston that much. Considering she's from Asturia, I figured Astor sounded better. I used the same name in FFXI, and several other MMOs as well.
My chocobo is usually called something along the lines of Paprika (LadyPaprika in FFXI), because that movie is just excellent :)
The story of my Character's names was actauly yaken from a book serous my Feonace intrudeced me to. to witch the main chara was named Tarma. Way back in my FFXI days i entered the name as Latarma and the name has been with me ever sence.
Raxia just a name I have used in games for awhile.
Moonpaw cats and keeper of the moon!
My Chocobo is Junktruck I'm still trying to figure that one out....
retainers Galaticpringles and Strangeguywithcandy another one of my wtf moments
Myono- combination of two random generated Mithra names I had in 360 beta. Rhyono and Myosi. Deleted both because I couldn't find the "look" I was going for. Lame I know.
Mhigo- Ichi quest anyone? Even my mules where "Cat Burglar Groupie" lol. Those poor Yagudos' the genocide I brought upon them. For those who don't understand Nana Mhigo was the NPC you did a repeatable FFXI quest for to get fame for the Ninjitsu scroll Utesumi: Ichi, in which you slaughtered roughly 300 yagudos for necklaces. Upon completing the quest you got the title Cat Burglar Groupie.
Kinda dorky I know but thats my story.
I NAMED MY CHOCOBO FLUTTERSHY!
poor bird....
My character name in-game is a character that shows up in a majority of my comics. I guess kinda like Gilgamesh shows up in random Final Fantasies.
Raion Hellfire is inspired by Square's Ifrit. But the only similarities is the beast-like body and the flaming hair and that he is a god and that his last name is Ifrit's Special Attack, Hellfire.

Kratos Aurion (Tales of Symphonia)
= My creative name
Been using the Velhart name since Everquest and I am not the type to break tradition!
Yeah, the name sounds cool. As for the character and the series, I have no idea. Never played it.
Arc the Lad 1 was the first PSX RPG to be released. It was really cool because once you beat the first game, you could convert your save file to the second game and use the same exact data. At the time, this was a really neat feature. You could convert AtL 2 to 3 also, but since 3 technically is not a direct continuation, you only got extra bonus features, but the features are nice enough to make sure you beat the second one first.
All three games are on PSN and recommend all of them.
As for my chocobo name, I named mine Chobi from Final Fantasy Unlimited.

My name is a spin on Solar Shift. I wanted to use Shift as my first name, but I didn't like "Solar" as the last name. I decided the Italian version "Solare" or "Solari" was a better fit. I made his traits reflect a Solar nature, Copper toned hair w/ bleached highlights, deep tan skin and Dark Red eyes.
My Chocobo's name is Kobal, a throwback to a name I used to use in previous MMOs.
Laziness.
Took my FFXI name, added two syllables to the end, then broke it into two pieces. It turned into a format along the lines of:
Given(First) Name: [SomethingThatLooksLikeAName]
Family(Last) Name: [NounNoun] or through a different interpretation [AdjectiveNoun] (Japanese words; cynics would say to increase the weaboo factor)
I'm gonna name my chocobo after my 1 1/2 year old pit bull that recently deceased. My chocobo's name is gonna be Cerberus.
For mount names, I had
Chester the Chocobo
and
Gregory the Goobbue!
Not terribly clever I know, but I did enjoy seeing a plain name in the phrase, "You summon Chester." (Oh no! Robert has summoned the Dreaded Chester!) Shame we couldn't officially name our Goobbues.
Hehe.
Raion Hellfire summoned Cerberus!
wtached ace ventura a few weeks before CE release...thought it was a good idea..

My rep name is a play of letters with my favorite female Final Fantasy character, Rikku. I switched around the "u" and "i" and then added "rii" to it because it sounded fancy. Thus Rukkirii was born! (pronounced: Roo keer ree)
I forgot to mention Nyea is a stupid expression me and my brother use all the time.
It's "No" and "Yeah", we use to give each other awkward answers to questions we're not sure we should say yes or no to.
I was trying to think of some generic middle eastern sounding name
edit: My character name is Azran Hayat... might help to know that
I used the random name generator from FFXI, and transfer that name over to FFXIV. People mistake it to be my real name too lol.
Larek Darkholme
Larek is the name of a character I created when I was writing webseries
Darkholme is for Raven Darkholme, the name of Mystique, the shape shifting mutant from Xmen
I will create more characters in ARR and keep that last name
<.<....... >.> no one is watching right? right!
Spent quite a long time trying to think of one as 1.0 alpha got closer and closer to starting. I chose to play a Lalafell because i liked the Taru Taru's attitude from XI, decided to play Lancer because well... even though Dragoon wasnt in the game i still wanted to stick close to my favourite job. Which is when i then took "high wind" the dragoon's trademark surname and latinised it to Altus Ventus then Lalanised it to Alaltus Veventus >=D
Lizam Prower

"Lizam" is just a take on my real name "Liam" that I've been using as my character/account name in various games for at least 10 years.
"Prower" however is a reference to the last name of the character, Miles 'Tails' Prower, which is a pun on "miles per hour". I've always been a huge fan of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog games on my Sega Megadrive, and Tails seemed to be the only Sonic character with a fitting last name ^_^;
I tend to choose interesting-sounding colors for my Internet-stuff names (or at least colors that I think have interesting-sounding names). My forum name is Indigo, my character is Sepia. My chocobo was named Saffron. :)
The chromatic theme for my names started back around the turn of the millenium. Long story short, I grew too attached to what was supposed to be a fake clan tag, and decided to keep the moniker prefixed to the name I had been going by. I've been using color-themed monikers ever since.
My character's surname was chosen to support what I wanted to do first with the character: Lancer, which I had a sneaking suspicion might eventually become Dragoon, if only by popular demand. Windsword sounds like an appropriate surname for someone who leaps high into the sky and crashes upon their enemies, blade-first.
is simple as me and my brother name together and with some mods
Yay!! I'm not the only one haha. I was always like "Dont tell ppl its suppose to be Rikku, they'll laugh >_>" lol
She was my fav too she's silly like me ^_^b
I went with Rykku cause it was my XI name and the name Gemma was taken which is what I wanted. so then decided Rikku, but they wouldnt let me spell it with an "I" so my brother said spell it with a "Y" and I thought it looked good.
And I went with the last name Olvarr cause its my husband's characters last name (Raagnar Olvarr ^_^)
