That’s the thing though, why should a filler arc mean that they can get away with subpar storytelling like what we’ve seen in these patches so far? I think they should absolutely be held to account on how they’ve been dropping the ball lately. At any rate, I long for a return to an era where we don’t have the sort of writing issues we’re seeing now let alone 700+ page threads arguing about the story.

If 7.0 can at least avoid that it’ll be a massive improvement, but I don’t trust them to not try to get all philosophical and preachy yet again. At least in the past Maehiro was more concerned with entertaining than using the game as a platform for whatever themes and beliefs these other writers have been quite blunt about shoving in our faces.

I want to add to that. Grim dark settings fundamentally do not work. They will always devolve into boring edgelording with shock value for the sake of having shock value (which actually erodes the effect of it). The only universe that manages to escape this is warhammer 40k and it only does so by going so ludicrously over the top that no sane person can take it seriously anymore.

I'm not inherently against levity and feelsy moments, but the amount of it in EW was a bit...jarring to me compared to what was previously presented in XIV.

It feels like there's been a definite shift in the style of storytelling for better or worse.

Precisely this. I don't mind a single moogle segment like we got back in Heavensward but in Endwalker the story treated me like some kind of baby having to pause and take breaks with nonsense like the burger scene or the Loporrits after killing Zodiark. I'd like a story written for adults instead of kids please.

Fun things or moments of levity between story beats are good I think. Despite what some may claim, I personally think Endwalker was one of the darker expansions overall, what with its notions on mortality, the Blasphemies being born ect. so it needed moments of clarity land humanity like that. It may not have always struck the right tone for every player sure, but hay, there are those who say Heavensward or Shadowbringers did not either!

I think its a shame when media nowadays is reduced to things like 'dark = adult, fun = chidish' as its a really restrictive way to look at fiction and what stories it can tell. Media and art suffer when we cannot conceptualise and analyze its layers.

Oh that would be so cool! (Assuming that they are not killed/leave in the final part of the raid… you never know!) Would be a great way to get even more detail on their particular areas. Perhaps it could even be another 'limited' job that you have to complet the raid story to unlock? May give them more leway in giving said Job more story then the new ones get. Unlikely to happen I know, but its fun to speculate!

Yeah, its a long shot. But then again, the devs have shocked us before. The new Summoner is a perfect example of that, so at least there's a small possibility they could pull that off at some point. Especially with, as you said, the 7.0 reworks possibly making jobs easier to better tinker around with without so much spaghetti code getting in the way. You say that as if the story about the never-ending cycle of hopelessness, war, death, and revenge didn't have Moogles suddenly appear right before the climax of that part of the story and bar our passage until they were given enough kupo nuts. Or cartoony catfish people (who eventually got an IRL children's book) who get drunk off tea weren't squatting in an abandoned mansion in the middle of a bombed-out hellscape.

I wasn't a fan of those, nor the placement of the Lopporits in the story (or taking up half the moon zone), but they aren't new things.


If you or someone else is going to bring up burgers, other food scenes, or moments of levity between the Scions, then how would you yourself make the players feel for the main characters of the story if they were just cardboard cutouts that were each just there being serious all the time? Moments of filler are necessary for character development and making a group of characters come together. Y'shtola is commonly referred to as not having much personality and then as soon as the writers give her 1 haha moment, threads appeared about it with people being angry which says enough about this forum.

The writing changed in that it's focusing more on building up the main characters together and that began in earnest in ShB, but I don't remember anyone having a problem with it back then. It's more noticeable now because there's more downtime in the plot due to it taking place over a much longer period of time instead of ShB's couple of weeks or so as well as the fact that the gang was all united from the beginning of the story instead of spread out. Even then, ShB still repeatedly brought us back to the inn room for quiet contemplation of the previous arc and story time with Ardbert with occasional appearances by the Exarch's picnic basket.


The creative director has obviously been static this whole time. Oda created the current lore for everything and has been on the writing credit for ARR and each expansion. It doesn't feel like they're purposefully altering the story to suit some sort of agenda or anything. They've just been writing it without a clear focus to the end, accidentally struck gold with part of the plot and characters in ShB, and seemingly haven't been able to recreate that in EW to the same degree.

As far as styles, HW was specifically mentioned by Yoshi-P as being written to be "dark fantasy" just like SB was obviously written to be a war story, ARR/ShB are heroic fantasy, and EW was a mix of them all with a dash of sci-fi. People are going to have preferences for one of those genres more than the others, but they have long since made a creative decision to dabble in a lot of things.

Personally, I'm a little exhausted of the heroic fantasy and hope the next thing is something different, but I'm still going to play it.

+1 to this.

The Graveyard Book and Coraline are both very dark books intended for children, but on the other side you also have fun things like the Discworld series that (depending on the book) are for adults but are almost nothing but levity that may have some darker moments.

The Gentleman Bastard series (which I highly recommend to literally anyone and everyone) is intended for adults and has a blend of pure dark moments and pure fun moments just like EW does but I've never heard anyone say its for babies or that it's a comedy series.

If you're looking for something that's dark and serious all the time, Final Fantasy isn't the place to go. No matter how dark the game, cutesy mascots like moogles, chocobos, and cactuar will show up that clash with the rest of the design and themes of the game. Even FFXV had Kenny Crow and FFXIII had a baby chocobo that lived in a guy's hair and grew up to be a scantily clad mascot human who sold potions and ghysahl greens.

It's also really strange to expect "a story written for adults" when you can play as a three-foot-tall cutesy munchkin.

Eh. I feel that Endwalker wasn't dark enough. And the urgency wasn't really there. By the time we head out into space, the Final Days had hit 2 zones in the entire world. Fire in the sky and everything. I think that it should have gotten more widespread as the story progressed. Even if the story's events weren't taking place in certain areas, I feel that the skybox should have at least been changed to reflect the coming apocalypse. Maybe set some random trees in the Black Shroud on fire too while they were at it. Something. Anything. The Final Days were not really as big of an issue as they made it out to be. I've got my fair share of gripes with EW, but this is my biggest one I think.

Thats fair. I actually thought similar when doing the Job quest, that despite the horrors of the Blasphemies the threat did not really seem as heavy as it could have been. Would be nice if they had shown the Final Days effecting wider zones, bit like how they added the towers in after the 5.x Patches. I suppose it may have been too much effort for just immersions gain. I do think it hit the right tone in dealing with its darker elements, the scene of the Blasphemies turning in Radz-at-Han really does not get the praise it should for the level of horror we see in my opinion. Then again, EW is also a story about hope against despair so they could only go so far.

Well said on all counts. When people say FFXIV is a 'theme park' game I think that should count for its lore too. Its crafted in a way that each expansion does deal with its own fantasy sub-genre, which I think is a very good thing. Means more themes and types of story can be told. Not everyone will vibe with each expansion true, but you will never be able to please eveyone all the time.

Yeah, this is still one of my problems with EW. If we had the starfall throughout parts of the world and maybe even changed or removed the BGM, it would've made a noticeable impact to the feelings of dread everyone was supposed to be having. While the Endwalker trailer didn't have that in the part of La Noscea the twins were in, things were at least on fire and there were blasphemies. Changing the skybox for part of the MSQ would've been the simplest thing and it's not like they didn't do that in ShB.

Pokemon Arceus had a much more compelling "end times" feeling.


While EW could have been helped by being darker, I don't think that removing burgers or "froth and foam!" would have helped anything. It went to darker places than other expansions did but they also set our expectations up with a worldwide disaster in the trailer for the expansion, only for it to just affect 2 brand new zones and one of those was an empty bombed out wasteland to begin with. If we had starfall or a sense of danger in zones we've grown familiar with for a decade, then it would've increased players' sense of urgency a lot more than the job quest blasphemies did for us.

Honestly I also look at people saying that Endwalker was not dark enough and question if they just dont mean "Endwalker did not kill enough named main NPCs" because that expansion was dark. The transformations are on par with the sineaters and with the hints that their souls might be gone too it was even more horrifiying than just people turning into monsters. I always remember the poor old lady that got transformed simply because she was afraid for her grandson. Or the family in the dungeon...doing that with the scions and seeing their reaction to that too...man it hit deep into the feels.

Then you have people being eaten alive, a child being turned and stomped on while the father is forced to watch. Us being too late to save the two parents and having to watch our fearful friend running for his life with a little baby in his arms. Until he was save I was so on the edge because they have shown before that they are able to kill younger characters.

And all of that happened in all of Eorzea and other part of the world.

Then you have Ultima Thule and its races who all came to a cruel end, some of it even done by their own hands. You have who knows how many souls that suffered for thousands of years inside of Endsingers egg. You have Meteion her self who has suffered greatly. (And all the other emotional stages in this expansion like for example Elpis and its fate)

And all of that is seemingly not dark enough because the main scions survive and because we dared to eat burgers together.

It's just boring overall. I was barely able to make it through the EW MSQ and just by going off that I was sure that the .x patches would be even worse, and I was right. Idk who they have writing this stuff, but they need to move them to something else. This expansion was not a good look for FF14, especially when we had a massive wave of people flocking to the game just to see....this.

The latest information we have is that the patch stories are being written relay-race style between different writers. Seems the baton got passed back to whoever did 6.1 with how much of a downgrade this one was. Hiroi hasn't stepped up to the MSQ yet until 7.0, but since he's working on Pandaemonium I'm going to use that as the benchmark as to whether or not 7.0 will be worth playing for me or not.

In an expansion overwhelmingly tilted towards childish and irrelevant nonsense, Pandaemonium stands apart as the sole storyline that I have any interest in because it actually manages to take itself seriously. I really like how he wrote Lahabrea last patch, especially because it really seemed to urk the Ascian haters that he wasn't his old cackling evil villain self. Nuance. You know, what we thought Endwalker would have before the story bent over backwards around Venat and the forced philosophical rambling about the meaning of life via Hermes and Meteion.

Honestly idk if I'm going to give 7.0 a try. Kinda tired of every other expansion being meh followed by a good or passable expansion just to be followed by another meh expansion. I've played that before with WoW.

• I feel that overall the game's trajectory is on a downward spiral.
  
  
• The storytelling made a noticeable shift in ShB, where the storytelling started to feel more "anime" than previously and in EW it really embraced that. And not for the better. I wouldn't consider EW a "dark" expansion either. It felt more juvenile in it's telling than any previous expansion with more tropey themes and predictable characters and predictable storytelling.
  
  
• As for this patch, it was terrible imo. I was actually getting more irate the more I went through the MSQ because there was no entertainment value to it and I felt like my time was being wasted. And this is the first time this has happened outside of ARR fetch quests.
  
  
• The new alliance raid isn't too bad. I always like doing the alliance raids so I'm a bit biased in this aspect. But Menphina doesn't seem to fit the theme. Nor her theme song. Instead of ancient god/goddess theme she's more like a magical girl anime trope. I don't hate it but it's whatever to me and just reinforces the whole anime storytelling approach they've seemed to adopted (which I don't care for.)
  
  
• The new 4 man has more rehashed and undyeable gear. Cheap, lazy and unneeded.
  
  
• Portraits are still a shit show. The UI continues to get more and more disjointed and terrible to navigate through and use, just like their piss poor inventory and glamour system.
  
  
• Casters/healers still get robes after years of complaints. This is probably one of the easiest things they could have done to appease players. Just throw them gear that isn't a robe here and there. It's not that much to ask.
  
  
  I could go on and on...
  At this point, it's painfully obvious that the design/dev teams don't know how to plan for future scalability and additions. If anything, I'm more amazed that this game is even playable because of how much spaghetti code it's built on.
  
  For a while now, I've been thinking of quitting. I've cut back on my play time and the only thing that's brought me back are friends. Or sometimes I just like to log in to look at my avatar but other than that, I find myself caring less and less for the game and the direction it's taking.
  
  Really wish the writer who did HW would come back.

Doesn't mean it had to be all Hydaelyn though. There were theories about parallels between the Twelve and the Convocation, as well as an hypothesis that they could have been created by the unsundered Ascians to help mankind back up immediately post-sundering.

Though I suppose this is part of Endwalker's pattern of forgetting the Hydaelyn/Zodiark arc was about Hydaelyn and Zodiark, too.

The tilt it is bad. It is causing the wipe raid.

We think the Lahee it is strong chara. The parrot social love of the Lahee to the Athens it beautiful. So bascially there might still be a chance that we do learn more about them in the future. But at least unlike many characters from the Convocation we basically knew nothing about her followers. Finally being able to learn at least a bit is just fair imo.

By comparison, those that came after Maehiro seem to have either benefited from luck and coincidence (Shadowbringers) and consequently failed upwards resulting in the spectacular disaster that was Endwalker's base MSQ, where we fought the 500 year old little girl of despair and discovered the true meaning of life. All while the deaths around us were collateral and the protagonist's closest friends were brought back after dying. Again. For Thancred to then proclaim they got away with not even a scratch to show for it all. What kind of apocalyptic story is this? Either make the cast likeable enough to justify keeping them around (this did not happen) or please for the love of God get rid of them.

At any rate, Maehiro's gone off to take charge of FFXVI and while his job in it is probably done and over with, if you were to ask me to take charge of FFXIV's story and lore after Endwalker wrecked it all I'd probably decline outright. Such is his right as well. Confirming no life exists on other planets anymore, destroying entire antagonist factions offscreen unceremoniously, and making the few gods that remain total jokes doesn't lend itself to the sorts of stories I imagine him wanting to tell. FFXIV's setting could be taken seriously back in the ARR-Heavensward days. This is no longer the case.

FFXVI on the other hand appears to be...everything I wish this game would have. More orders of knights. Consequences for overusing or abusing magic - while Y'shtola's aether vision eating her life force away was retconned here. At least in Valisthea she would have been turned to stone by now, and preferably shattered soon afterwards. More Ysayle types. The sort of classic high fantasy elements that are either completely absent from this game or present in such minute or uninspired ways as to be entirely forgettable.

The now publicly available ratings for the game also went into specific detail as to the sort of brutal events we can expect to see, and I'm all for that as well. No more kiddie gloves, finally we're going to see some full on medieval grit. What a pity that the same cannot be said for FFXIV. Instead of animations that would serve the game's fantasy setting, we get steamed buns. Utterly ridiculous.

Pande "takes itself seriously" and the rest of the game doesn't? Does a cracked joke mean things aren't serious? Is the presence of food somehow how serious? Is the fact Vrtras sister being missing for so long and stuck in the 13th not serious? Is the struggle of the Garlean people to this day not serious? There are parts of the game that are serious and parts that aren't. To say none of it is is a lie.

For you to just call it "forced philosophical ramblings" tells me you lack empathy as a human being. We were dealing with Nihilism in its purest form. That concept must have flown over your head

Still find it odd your idea of characters revolves around women you don't like that you wish died, and women you do like that did end up dead. Why I say you have some sort of death fetish. Man says food is out of place in a game that has turtles with booster jets as feet...

Nuance...yes a word you seem to not care about. The story doesn't bend over backwards for her just like it doesn't bend over backwards for Emet or Hermes. The game offers a perspective on all these people and even LETS your character choose how to see it. I said they were all justified in their own way. That's OK. That's good writing.

I have come to terms that Aveyond is posting with alt accounts and quoting themselves at this point that's how ludicrous this has become XD I get some of the points made but people here have made great comments back yet haven't been quoted by the OP it seems they don't want to acknowledge people with genuine thought behind their retorts.

That's because I don't believe his goal here is to discuss anything. He just wants to put his opinion out, call it fact and ignore anything after that doesn't suit his agenda. He knows not all of us are trying to clown him. But it's easier to write others off than it is to confront their points and bring forth facts to dispute them. I've said before he is right about things such as lore changes. (I've also said that's something that is bound to happen with longstanding lore, but I get why that can erk people). I've also called him o being wrong about certain events n things that take place. Again nothing but facts there but neither matters really.

I'm not licensed or anything but if I had to guess he doesn't have a real vent in life so he comes to the forums n vents here. I don't say that as an insult by any means. Just how it seems to me. I mean it when I say I feel bad for him sometimes cause I wouldn't want to be bound by a game I hate n somehow feel betrayed by.

Well said, and yeah I do not understand the disappointment that the Scions survived. Disappointment that we got a bunch of faux sacrifices when it was painfully obvious that they would not stay dead? Sure, that was annoying and a low part for the story for me, but a death does not automatically make something more ‘adult’. It can add to a story and be an impactfull event sure (Such as in Heavensword) but plenty of fiction has also killed off characters needlessly for empty shock value, or lazy writing ect. I for one am glad they are all still out there. We can move on to a newer cast in 7.0 with the rest still existing somewhere on Etheirys. There are still stories they can tell and arcs to fulfil.

I will never understand how some people can be so spiteful over what characters other people love/hate, cheering on the idea of a character dying just to ‘trigger’ others or belittling the reasons why they connect with them. Art is subjective, its one of the great things about having a lore world full of character archetypes like this. And no, before anyone says it I do not think “Well they made fun of *insert character I like* first!” is a suitable reason to mock and belittle others. Be better then them.

There are things I'd rather they did differently, sure. There are aspects I feel they gave too much relevance when it really isn't all that impressive. Would I call it a disaster? No, just "not suited to my tastes". And I'd be fine with that.

My review on 6.3? It's pretty good. Cagnazzo should've involved more but judged by his past, I think it's fair. Rubicante tho... Oh my god his looks is excellent. His trial fight (not EX) is pretty good and not as chaotic as Barbariccia, and his arena is so scary looking. I think his past is the most saddest thing among other Archfiends...

Zero and Jullus eating buuz will triggers the Lamb of Dalamud here like G'raha eating burger :)

I couldn't help but laugh a little everytime I saw Rubicante's tiny horns. They're just...so tiny. x'3

For myself, I felt Barbariccia was more fun because of the absolute chaos, while Rubicante was kind of disappointing in how simple it was. Then again, I prefer more chaos in a fight, rather then putting in thought to solve puzzle mechanics. Me simple oonga boonga like that. x3

I liked the buuz scene! It also shows how far the devs are able to go now when it comes to animations compared to how rigged they're usually forced to be. Plus, the buuz looked pretty tasty. :3

Honestly at this point they're playing into the attention IMO. The memes that Aveyond will hate on everything story-related, the memes about food scenes, whatnot.

I remember the days when they defended SMN rework but once that topic died out from the spotlight they were nowhere to be seen.
