Wasted potential for getting players to play other classes... simple as that...
Per the person I quoted, this would be an alternative to purchasing it from the mogstation. If I could do a short quest, what incentive do I have to give them $24? You also realize these types of micro-transactions are not unique to MMOs, yes? Every genre has them in some form or another nowadays.
There is still a difference between a short quest and an horrible grind. Make it something that might take a bit of a dedictation (something like one relic step or the whole weapon) and you will have people that might like to buy it but also people that are willing to grind for it without it being horrible or taking years to finish.
Also you could simply give us one color ingame and the other in the cash shop. Those that dont care about collection all mounts will be happy for that one one mount and the others that want a whole collection or just a different color can buy it. This way they will still earn money but give people the chance to own it ingame. Just like they did in the past with the birds and the magitek mounts.
To be fair, most of the relic steps are a horrible grind. We've had FATEs will abysmally low drop rates, Books that required doing specific content, light farming which essentially resulted in spamming Garuda or A1S for several hours and etc. Bear in mind, I'm not advocating this be the alternative. I'm merely saying if they ever did make cash shop exclusives obtainable in-game, it will almost certainly be locked behind an arduous grind. They want our money and aren't going to make an alternative method of getting these $24 mounts easy, otherwise most people aren't going to buy them. The majority of cash shop mounts are either re-skins or old event rewards. Only three are truly exclusive. Releasing one for "free" and only putting palette swaps on the Mogstation won't net them a fraction of what they have likely made now. At the end of the day, that is their concern.
If I were to offer my own alternative. I'd say use the achievement certificate system. Such and such points allows you to purchase certain things from the Mogstation. Granted, I have little doubt the amount required would be... high, but it's still an option.
It would be nice to get the red, black or white carbuncles in game. I don't think game rewards should be available in the shop when they are still in the game, but recolors would allow the same mount model to be obtained in different ways. Like the Bennu/Zu mounts.
I did not specify how it would be grinded/farmed in-game.
It could be quests, or a new vendor, or new achievements, but those might add significant effort to the core development team (cash shop team is separate, based on my understanding) who is most likely already busy on their own development schedule. Tying it to the roulettes or something to incentivize MSQ instances would also probably fall into this category of requiring significant core dev team work, but would still be within the realm of possibility.
But it could also be the following, which would require only minimal input from the core development team, and thus not alter their development schedule too much:
It could be trial/dungeon/raid drops, or roulette rewards which would just require the core development team to add to the loot tables.
It could be an existing vendor, at a crazy currency prize, essentially another loot table.
It could be the underused new achievement currency system. Let people farm whatever achievements they feel like farming in order to earn new stuff from the "cash shop" team. If an API was given from the core development team to the cash shop team to make use of this, it would enable future additions with no core development team effort. Personally I'd prefer this option because everyone has something they grind, even if they don't realize they're grinding it because they enjoy it, and pretty much everyone has "what I'd do next" grinds that they might not be focusing on right now, almost all of which come with their own sets of achievements, but might focus on if they could redeem the new currency for more items.
Notice I said "new stuff". I do realize that adding existing cash shop items to be purchasable in-game would be unfair to people who spent the money when no such option existed. Likewise I realize that adding existing rare mounts to the cash shop would make people who farmed for them feel like their efforts are undermined. Being both in-shop and in-game would have to be a "from now on" thing.
I wonder if the people complaining about this are the same ones who bought the shiva figurine.....
I wish when you summoned/dismissed it, it would appear/disappear like a summoned 'buncle does
They are so cute! I want one so bad! .... But $24? really? Not going to happen
I will be first on line when that happens!
I would love this because it would give achievements a better use. (Since veterans will probably own lots of the rewards already) But imo if they do that they should decrease the amount needed for veteran rewards to make it fair for those that dont own them.
I'd prefer the achievement certificates to be associated with something that can only be obtained in game, personally. You can't buy the veteran rewards after all.
It would also lead to people who are content with buying stuff directly from the Mog Station losing out as they themselves would have nothing to spend their certificates on.
And that's precisely why most F2P mmo are rip off (by either making you buy stuff in the cash shop or making you grind countless hours to get stuff), and FFXIV is walking down that road with XP and story skip potions.
It's just as if I were to build a theme park while putting the entrance 10 km away from the rides, and forbidding you the use of a car to go from the entrance to the ride. So that's you either would have to walk a long time to reach the ride you paid for or pay an extra to skip all the walking (which would be the microtransactions in MMO).
Nobody would go to such a theme park in real life.
And currently every loyal customer who got those veteran rewards as veteran rewards is losing out on the system because it only includes the old veteran rewards and it doesnt seem as if anything will get added to it. I've been subbed since ARR beta and I always hoped they'd make the achievment-points useful in someway. And now they did... but not for me. I have nothing to spend those certificates on and that not even by choice - someone who "cant" spend those because they bought everything for real money on the mogstation pretty much did that themself.
As long as the promotional items are exclusive for a period of time(not indefinitely, as quite honestly most people don't touch them after the first few weeks of getting them), and putting them on the Mog Station honestly wouldn't be a bad idea. I would LOVE to get the Odin statue code, but if you try and buy the statue now from eBay, or wherever else, the code will have already been used, and you will only get the cool statue. Make it 2 years of exclusivity, and then throw it on the Mog Station, and that would probably appease many people(not all, because you can NEVER make everyone happy).
Except, the developers aren’t forcing anybody to purchase things from the cash shop. People don’t have to buy MSQ skip potions. They don’t have to buy job jump potions. It’s entirely optional. As would be walking in your theme park analogy—they don’t have to pay extra for a ride to their queue line, they can just walk.
This analogy doesn't work. Yours is a massive inconvenience whereas the Carbuncle has literally no impact on your game beyond a desire to have it. A better equivalent is how theme parks typically ban outside food being brought in while charging higher prices themselves. Keeping in mind, like the Carbuncle mounts, that food is entirely optional.
F2P mmos don't offer content updates every fourteen weeks and have significantly more exclusive items. Most also dabble in lootboxes, which SE has avoided thus far.
I might be a minority here, but I'm happy there's a cash shop and that its getting new things. Not new things I want, but the stuff is still nice. Not everyone has time to grind for things in game. People who feel they are gated off from the new mounts because they're in the cash shop and there are people who feel like they are gated off from content in game because they don't have the time to work for it. There's a mount comes from 200(?) wins in Rival Wings that I will never have because I don't have time. I want it, but I don't need it and I can live without it.
I wasn't planing on getting a carbuncle but it looks like they're account wide, so maybe
Oh look, pages and pages of people once again complaining about the Mog Station, how original and refreshing! You people—no, you know what? I think I’m going to sit this conversation out. If I shared how I really felt I would get banned from the forums again. I like my forum access, gentlemen, so I’ll leave you to your pettiness.
I wish they had made the carbuncle mounts 3x or 4x the price. Then maybe I wouldn't have to see the damned MyLittlePony treerats everywhere. I thought chocobos were ugly, but these sparkly vermin take the cake. The fact that they have the same scaling problem as the yokai cumsprites tells me the developers are pointing and laughing at each non-Lalafel that lines up to buy them.
I don't buy anything off the cash shop. The beg-emote stopped me for a second, but that's only because I thought the miqote came with the emote. Sure. I'd spam it.
Other things I would pay extra for...
- Y'shtola mount. God knows we won't ever get any MSQ time with her. (not bitter)
- Filtering goggles. Let's us select for visual substitution any in-game entities we would rather not see on our screens (like Lalafels, moogles, carbuncles, Kan-e-senna...)
I don't think most people would be against the cash shop as much if there were some in-game means of acquiring most/all of the items on the cash shop from both fronts. Personally, I'm not against it, as that's just how things are now as a norm. More and more, people are finding themselves in disposable income. Many (not all) who may not have it now will have it in the near future. It sucks that things are where it is, but consumers want things faster, even if it means paying for it... that's the demand of the consumers themselves as a whole.
If those items were added in, like say some achievement award akin to that Hunt mount with ridiculous requirements, it still probably wouldn't be met with TOO much backlash outside of petty frustration. Personally, if I really wanted it and was faced with spending months grinding for something, I'd probably prefer the pay option if it isn't too expensive. $24 isn't bad for a mount that would otherwise take months or possibly years to do in-game, but if I don't care to spend, then oh well... not for me.
I actually despise the price for shit on the store. Something about the mounts/items in this games shop really don't justify the price tag for me. I mean the Carbuncle stuff looks quality grade, so it's hard to resist, but when you look at the other stuff they have, that's some ridiculous pricing. $7 for an emote? Something we have an immense number of that are with the game that you at its price. Likewise $5-15 for housing items or rehashed glamour-only items? Again, stuff we already have immense numbers of in the game at its base value. The dyes... because there's an in-game version available for most of them, they get a bit of a pass.
Maybe it's from my realization that I spent $25-30 for each of my several mounts I bought on WoW years ago and how little use those mounts provided, when you come to terms with how many mounts the game has in general and will keep adding to. I simply recognize that $24 for the amount of time you'd spend trying to get the thing from difficult/long methods, not to mention the amount of frustration/boredom to get there compared to how much you'd make at your job in that same time, makes it easily arguable as being "worth it" if you really want it.
Do note however that it's obvious the devs are willing to put those sorts of high dedication requirements into the game for non-cash shop items, like The Hunt mount. So to potentially see something of that equivalent be made at the same time as it being available for real money purchasing is NOT an unreasonable or unexpected outcome. It'd just be good to see those goods be attainable in-game and for the shop prices to be halved (at least), I'd actually consider spending sometimes. Obviously too, this would not mean ALL difficult to obtain items. Leaving some things, such as any Savage/Extreme mounts, as in-game only is highly beneficial for the appeal of the game.
When you start equating optional mounts (most of whom are a reskin of what's already in-game), vanity equipment (a good portion of which was in-game at one point and the rest makes up a tiny, tiny fraction of the overall equipment that we get more of every patch), and relatively benign jump potions to RNG loot boxes and full on DLC, yes, you have certainly reached a level of pettiness that would make a career politician's panties moist. But whatever, I know better than to waste my time attempting to change anyone's mind on these forums. Not when most of the people always complaining about the cash shop have somehow managed to convince themselves that their sub earns them any otherrightprivilege besides server access.
Even if SE were to add these items into the game, I guarantee that 90% of the players here complaining about them being in the cash shop would instead complain about the unholy grind or content they would be locked behind. These back and forth flip-flops are so regular that at least half of the O-Forums must imbibe Metamucil like they're stranded in the desert about to die of thirst.
And then you have--no! I--you--! You son of a--! I told you I didn't want--! I don't want--! RRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
While I agree that SE might put some new stuff in MogStation, in the other hand, we have many mounts we can get from the game itself. Like Boreas, Enbarr, lanners, etc...
One or two new mounts via Mogstation won't hurt
When the actual game is getting tired, ugly and reused old glamours (often by making them dyeable) in new patches but the cash shop is getting new fancy items. I think it's time to stop.
Too sleepy to dig through all the replies but CAN WE PLEASE FIX CARBUNCLE'S PIXELATED NOSE? PLEASE? PRETTY PLEASE? :'D

Completely agree. It's not really the mounts that bother me (they're cute, and they're at a reasonable price compared to other cs mounts as well as there being a wealth of original mounts available in the game), it's the outfits. We're being cut down to one dungeon to run for one original set, the craftable sets are reskins of previous content awards, and no new pvp awards while original glamour sets are being specifically made for the cash shop for prices that are fairly unreasonable. That just kind of does it for me. When the amount of effort being put into the cash shop in relation to a specific type of content (gear) starts to catch up with the amount of effort being put into that type of content in the actual game, imo that's a turning point.
On a happier note. I met Hyomin and Miste in-game! We took pictures :D

Absolutely love carby but that is way expensive.
24 usd? So for me it is around 35
I don't like Carbuncles.
Wish next Ifrit, Titan and Garuda come mounts and glam. When I will buy them.
