It's something that's bound to happen at least once to every tank out there, as they waltz into the great wide open -- my pet name for it is "The Freight Train Experience".

so my dear co-tanks, why don't you switch your stance? like 75% of all sophia fight, i have this tank and mostly spamming aggro rotation in tankstance as ot.
Wanna hear something truly horrifying? Almost all of my Sophie Ex clears have been done in Raid Finder with randoms. I saw countless PF groups which specify: "CLEAR GROUP. NO BONUS" but wipe repeatedly and fail to clear; yet, I rolled the dice on Raid Finder and cleared on the first try. All subsequent runs were cleared with one wipe or less. Sophie isn't exactly the diamond standard of Extreme Trials, but at this point I've been putting more faith in randoms than I have been in people who supposedly know what they're doing. It's mind blowing.
This one's kind of a tanking horror story ... in that I was tanking, but not actually playing as a tank.
I've been leveling nin on the side lately, and I join an in-prog of AV. The group had basically just cleared 2nd boss before I got there, but there's only one left -- another nin. He says he waited an hour for that queue, and I sympathize cuz dps queues are garbage. So I say, "might as well have some fun while we wait." Off we go into what must be the strangest paper-tanking swap outs I've ever seen.
Basically, we pulled one group at a time to the giant room where the 2nd ogre boss is. Then we ran in a MASSIVE circle while throwing daggers at the mobs chasing us. Each one of us ran in opposite circles (one clockwise and the other counter-clockwise), and we placed Doton's down at opposite ends of the arena (12 o'clock and 6 o'clock), making sure to kite our respective mobs through both dots to apply consecutive heavies. When we passed each other's mobs, we would hit 'em with a fly-by combo. Each of us only hit one mob from each other's pack so that when we gained aggro, we would also lose aggro on one of our pack. We kept up that weird swap-and-kite method until everything died. It took forever, but we eventually cleared everything up to the final boss door with just 2 nin's. Thankfully, we got a healer by then. A tank joined at around 40% of the final Boss's health (typical), and we cleared at normal.
As far as tanking horror stories go, it wasn't the worst I've ever seen, but it was a strange one. Made for a fun bit of madness.
Hi, so i\\\\\\'ve been tanking in mmo\\\\'s for a good bit of games. Tonight I ran the anti tower 3 times with a good group of players, while tanking as drk. Round 4 FIGHT!! So in the next group I have a blkm that is somehow targeting anything and everything that the group is not, and then starts pulling aggro right off me. Healer and brd no problems. Please keep in mind that i\\\\'m playing on a ps4 not pc. During the second boss fight, the blkm is focusing on the boss full time and not the rocks. Then we get to second half of fight I pull spawns hold them while dps attack rocks, and when the rocks get finished he goes to boss and not the adds, I died, and group wipes. He then asks do you have provoke? i\\\\\\'ve never had to use provoke as a drk before in a pug group. My bars are filled with everything i\\\\\\'ve ever needed. And he then starts telling me I didn\\\\\\'t know how to tank. Considering I never really have problems tanking. Is it me or the dps?
Leveling roulette. Brayflox, with 3 level 38 onions.
First timer bonus, too. Cringe.
Black mage aggros 4 extra mobs. Drags them over to me. I flash, now have aggro on 8 mobs.
Me: Don't pull extra groups, please.
BLM: But I want that chest with <thing you can buy for 38 gil off the market board>.
Proceeds to do it twice more. I let her die the second time.
WHM is obviously a friend, and suddenly stops healing me. Despite it, I survive.
Approaching the final boss, the BLM runs off the get the couerl chest. I run ahead and pull the final boss. BLM gets locked out, dies.
At least I got to need the drop on the last chest.
You say the blm is targeting things no-one else is. If this is true, they are wrong, they should be aoeing.
Re second boss though, have to say, I'm with him. if the dps is on point, you just burn down the boss before the exploding rocks make any difference. Going after the rocks is just a waste of time. it's like in ARF, boss 1, people still kill the turrets, when its quicker to just tear down the boss.
You should have provoke, but equally you shouldn't need it as you should be holding hate anyway. assuming of course, the blm is using quelling
Horror story?
I cleared every single content except a11s and a12s without {Provoke}
A real nightmare :'(
Ran Gubal HM as WAR with my BLM girlfriend the other day. Ended up with an AST and a MNK who quite honestly was terrible. I'm not usually one to mind poor DPS since Deliverence and Flare nuking usually compensates pretty well for that, but this guy kept standing in everything on the way and barely broke 700 DPS. The AST didn't DPS at all.
When we finally got to Strix after ~20 minutes, the MNK got himself killed within the first 30 seconds, was raised, and then the AST disconnected when the boss was around 50%.
You know that feeling when a dungeon boss suddenly feels like an EX trial? I jumped into Defiance and started popping cooldowns and Inner Beasts. The MNK died again at 46% (didn't hide behind a rock), and me and my girlfriend completed the rest on our own. First and only time I've seen Strix' mechanics start over with a second Tornado. I was pleased we cleared, but man. How a MNK like that even got to endgame is beyond me.
Hullbreaker HM. Final boss. Got 2 onions and a snotty know it all bard with i260 relic.
I pull, get a good enmity lead on the first tentacle, leave it at 25% and run to the 2nd on on the first island. I start tanking the 2nd tentacle, thinking the rest will follow my lead, but DPS is nonexistent.
All 3 others had jumped left after the first tentacle died.
In the space of 20 seconds, the WHM took aggro, DRG dropped a whirlwind in the middle of them all and died. BRD is at 20%, starts whining at me, "Come on, tank this sh*t."
WHM panics and starts using water spouts to jump all over trying to get away from the tentacles, gaining stacks every time.
SMH. There's a reason I'm not a mentor.
A tank pops up with min gear requirements everyone else on High level gear and relic. Long run specially at Scorpion phase. Luckily we had an awesome healer
Doing diabolos dun scaith fight doing the job of the ots and fight main boss to as the tanks could not aggro simple adds. My heart was beating like hell.
im going to start off by saying im not a Pro at tanking (tank as DRK)... i pull to my comfort level (usually small fast pulls)... im fine in dungeons but lack the confidence for 8 or 24 man runs... as for horror stories ive probably ended up tanking more dungeons as a DPS (ninja usually) than i have as a tank simply because the tanks just wernt doing their job (didnt want to or didnt know how, i dont know which)... nothing worse than having to switch to Titan-egi as a summoner because your tank has NO IDEA what hes supposed to be doing... if i have to do it i will but if im tanking and DPSing as a DPS class i better walk away with the coms...
I actually have a recent one - First Punishing Heat after Inception in A12S, the party DPS was good, so we were pushing things a tad faster than my cooldown's recasts. A number of other people had made mistakes in previous pulls, and we had acknowledged them and recovered. I'd spent the entire fight out of Grit and was doing fine. I noticed the SCH was very reluctant to stop DPSing and help their co-healer though. Heat came and I had DM and Conva up, took 33K, no shield, the auto afterwards killed me. The BLM raged and had me kicked. The BLM. Afterwards, the WHM who is on my server messaged me and said that yeah, the SCH was struggling, but she kicked me to appease the BLM and other DPS because "they're from Gilgamesh and I want my cane."
#scapetank2017.
Fun fact - my next farm party I had my pocket healer with me - managed 97th with both healers still doing 13-1400 DPS combined. #endthemainhealeroffhealermeta
My horror stories were all basically the same this weekend - with my whopping average of i167 and having seen the higher tier trials/dungeons once, maybe twice...I kept being the most experienced person in my party, and things were not going well.
In Dzmael, we wiped twice to trash packs and our two DPS died a total of like 7 times total on the final boss. I tend to look inward when bad stuff happens, but what should I be doing besides tanking to the mechanics of the fight, such that our Summoner and Monk don't die multiple times? I have aggro whole fight, I point cleave away from group, I even teach the whole "kill the crystals NAO!!" thing, but what else can I do?
Whenever I get two inexperienced DPS in one instance, I have serious trouble carrying them. What can you do as a tank in those occasions, because I am in one long, interrupted blur of horror stories lately.
One time. I started a level 50 ARR quest, and forgot if you do a quest lower level than you, it strips you of all buffs...so I wasn't in shield oath. Pulled first big pull, couldn't keep hate. Finally realized mistake, tapped in on, grabbed all hate back, and finished fight without any death.
Party kicked me.
Love this community to death.
I recall a time two weeks ago where I entered SotFather for a gear. I'd say approximately 40 seconds after the "SONIC BOOM", Alex randomly turns around and starts chasing me (WHM). Both tanks were alive and neither had died, and I had not used anything major or been overhealing (just the usual Deeps/Deeps/Top-off/Deeps), so I can only assume they were both farting around in DPS stance. I guess the mixture put me above the DPS emnity count - the other healer was borderline AFK reactively being on 'healthbar watch' duty (very slow). Neither tank seemed to deem it important enough to actually get him off me, so I ended up sprinting around the edges for the entire minute it took them to realize what was going on. I was doing my best to ensure his triangular AoE busters weren't cutting across all the other players in the middle of the arena while running for my life. Given they showed no desire to peel, I couldn't stop kiting in the hopes someone would pull him off me, so just kept runnin' and gunnin'.
As weird/amusing as it was, we cleared it like nothing happened when they woke the hell up, but this didn't stop me cringing at the prospect of them entering a savage raid with those shenanigans.
Party ask me to stay more in dps stance and do huge mega pull, after burned 3 defensive cd, I died.
Played with a AS12 geared tanked that couldn't hold hate from my measly geared mnk in gubal library. This i why I just tank roulette's myself but damn I wanna try other stuff but people suck.
Co-tanks popping every CD on their hotbar on initial pull... O.o
Another, another... OTs that refuse to drop tank stance. Why? "Cos I'm a tank, stupid." O.o
I'd stay in Tank Stance for Lakshmi Extreme offtanking because I need to remain as #2 threat and I don't trust myself to remember it. I mean, I'll eventually go to DPS stance, but for now, I'd rather not risk her cleaving a DPS, because that means I'm not doing my job.
I use Shirk, more tanks need to try Shirk. You can stay in DPS stance as an OT the whole fight by 'voking Laks then immediately Shirk the MT. You'll match their aggro then boost it by 25 percent. Repeat every 2mins. Meaning the rest of your party will never catch the tanks in Aggro. I was doing Suzi runs last night where after second buster me and OT just swapped using shirk and stayed in OT stance till kill, unless things go awry of course. Have you got any tank friends you can practice it with. I started using Shirk with one other tank buddy in Ifrit hard just to get a feel for it, before taking it endgame.
And now for a story about true pain… true true pain.
Silly little me went: “Hey, I haven’t done lvling roulette in a while, I’ll do it as war.” So I get in and end up in Great Gubal Library. I see nin is newish, bard is newbie, but healer is dressed in 60 gear and has plenty 60 classes so I don’t worry too much.
I’m slightly nervous before the first boss. The healer lets me drop to almost death multiple times during pulls and pops cool downs at odd times. “Hey! My mp is full, let me pop shroud of something something!! Genius!”
First boss, 2 aoe attacks go off and me and nin are the only ones left standing. 5 more aoe attacks and the nin goes down. I go “Fuck this, I’m not willing to solo this shit.” So I kill myself.
Fresh start aaaaaaaand same shit… bard manages to say this “Healer, could you maybe esuna the slow debuff?” Now don’t get me wrong, yes the healer is shit, but this fucker…. That debuff is so dodge able if you just don’t get hit by the ice aoe so I can’t even get behind their comment about this shit healer!
In the end I manage to solo the first boss, a lot more work as war than as pally, but doable.
Second boss works well enough, the light balls are annoying, but get through it quick enough.
Then… the last boss…. You know the last boss right? He’s pain incarnate with his “mark over head, drop giant ball of pain on this person. 2 or 3 people on this thing or else in spawns giant extra mob of doom”…. Yeah that lovable guy, with this group…
At this point I’m begging for someone to vote kick this healer, but I have a feeling that the nin is with the healer.
So…. First round. About 1 min in and healer is dead. Why? Because they stood in ball of pain… the ball of pain they themselves dropped… and this ball of pain does not kill you in one hit, it takes a good 4 or 5 hits. So this fucker stood there for 4 hits, and even tried to heal themselves while still standing in the ball of pain!!
I let out a little sigh, but soldier on, until my brain dead dps manages to not help me with a single “stand on glowing shit” and 4 mobs spawn… I kindly get aggro of all of them and promptly die.
Round 2 (lemme just say there was a lot of rounds). The healer manages to do the same shit, dps being stupid, wipe, reset. Bard leaves, and we get a new bard. As we’ve been wiping I’ve noticed the nin is learning. He’s starting to help me with the “stand in this shit”, he’s even killing mobs and placing balls right. So I have half a hope that if this new bard is just barely capable we might manage to get through this.
Fight starts, healer dies again… I heave another sigh and get ready for the pain… que the most intense fight in the history of warrior legend, using whatever skill I have for damage reduction and self healing. The dps are finally on point. Doing all the “stand in this shit” and placing balls correctly. We manage to kill the boss with all of us standing. I get a bow from nin, and a “war op” from bard (healer is silent as the grave as they’ve been all run).
I leave with 3 comms, and as I look out over Limsa Lominsa I stand there with a feeling of: “I don’t think the comms are worth it no more.”
For the final kick, guess who was top on dps… no no, it’s cool. I’ll solo all the bosses, heal myself and do the most dps, it’s cool, I can do that.

It's really weird how the normal GGL has turned into an extreme coordination test for pugs. I feel genuine fear when it pops up in roulette and I'm with an at-level group. The Everliving Bibliotaph just doesn't fuck around.
