They're animated cartoon characters so I call them both. it is just easier to type toon really, char just don't sound right anyway and I don't feel like typing out the full word. We're not writing essays here so there is no right answer.
LMAO to those that would be petty and BL someone for calling something a toon. You really don't need to play a MMO b/c here in the real world there is going to be a whole lot of things you're not going to like.
Character. If for no other reason than that 'toon' is not an accurate description of what it is, strictly speaking. This game is not an animated cartoon. An avatar is technically the incarnation of a Hindu god, but even that is better than toon and would also be an acceptable description if The Guild hadn't made that word so dirty. Anyone using the word toon I automatically assume suffers from a poor vocabulary or doesn't care about things such as accuracy or using meaningful words. In my experience they're usually annoying or bad players, as well. That doesn't mean it bothers me, just that it reflects poorly on them. If character just takes too long for your poor little fingers to type, char is perfectly fine. As would be avi for avatar.
As a matter of fact, if you told me you just bought a new auto my first reaction would probably be to look at you funny rather than congratulate you. The word you've chosen is not descriptive. You bought an auto what? On the other hand if you told me you were an auto trader that would make perfect sense and not bother me. Synonyms are one thing, but the way you use the language matters.
Balk? No.
If you bought an auto, I would tilt my head and wonder if you bought a gun, car, or the evil robot from WALL-E.
If you bought an automobile, I would raise my eyebrow and wonder what sort of classy antique auction sold you that "automobile."
You bought a vehicle...? Was it a ship? A plane? A wormhole? Bus?
And if you bought a ride, well... either you bribed someone for a ride home, or you paid them for...
personally i use Char, but why the hell does anyone else care what someone else chooses to call it? does it offend you that much?
EDIT: this disconnect between how people refer to their game character's just seems like yet another excuse to try and make someone feel they are inferior -.-
I use character, I'll also toy with using persona.
I don't like the term toon. From what I know, the term originated from WoW, a game I'm not overly fond of so this might just be biased. I'm not gonna tell people to stop, I just like to joking say it's a character not a toon. But that's as far as I go. This is really just an opinionated question to answer.
Character for me, although nothing against others saying toon, but to me I always picture roger rabbit saying stupidly "what are you a TOON"?????!!! And it somewhat bugs me lol
But really for me it's just due to my age I guess. It's like as we get older we wouldn't say boys and girls, it's men and women. Neither are WRONG, it's just the way it is for me. (Although never call a woman under 60 mam lol! And even then id still hesitate..learned that the hard way LOL).
As many others have said, I don't know why but toon bothers me and I go with character.
