It's still not 100%, we 'should' be able to, the only concern really is that while it's viable, it is a one-time thing so if you make a mistake typing it, you are stuck with it

I've never quite understood that argument.... being able to change it is a "one-time deal", and "super scary" to offer to players because of possible mistakes, but somehow that logic doesn't apply to only getting the very first naming at initial character creation with no ability to make a change at all, ever, even once??? Lamest damn excuse I've heard in a loooooooong time.

That said I'm 99% certain they'll let us do it. With how many people want it, the lore-friendly naming conventions being released, and awkward names resulting from gender changes (which it's confirmed we'll be able to do), it's nearly inconceivable they wouldn't offer it to us.

So it might wipe your friendlist or linkshell membership... just rebuild it. I thought linkshells were being wiped anyways, and friendlists ought to be wiped for everyone so we can have confidence that every friend request had to be accepted instead of the 1.0 stalker-mode flists.

The only argument against it I've heard worth any salt is it allows players with a bad reputation a new lease on life. Which to me is a good thing. Maybe they've turned over a new leaf and revised their ways. And if they haven't reformed and still ninja loot like it's going out of style, they're gonna rebuild that reputation fast under the new name.

The difference is that if you make a mistake when you first create your character you don't lose much by just deleting it and starting a new one with the right name. Make a mistake on your legacy character and you're stuck with it (or lose all that progress).

If they allow the name change, which I am pretty sure they will; you can guarantee that some people will be calling a GM and demanding a re-do because they made a mistake and then being extremely disappointed that they are now stuck with it, unless they start over and lose all of their progress.
While we may be absolutely amazing with our typing skills (a little sarcasm here lol, I'm always making mistakes! yay jellyfingers :p), some people may not be and they may not think that it's absolutely necessary to double check what they've entered.

Alright... so now I've finally heard a well-articulated argument for it, thanks Tyger.

Still, just make sure to be real extra careful when typing it (lock the cat out of the room so it can't walk on your keyboard... not sure how that'll work locking yourself out of the room, sorry miqo'tes...), slap it behind an extra wall of confirmation button or two and call it good.

You'd also think being able to change your appearance and even race entirely would be just as big a decision and just as permanent, though, yet that's no big deal whereas the name, we'd better be super reserved about that... soooooooooo, maybe I should bump myself up to 99.9% sure?

Ugh... I know this is true and this affects more than just FFXIV... What ever happened to personal responsibility? Why is it not okay for us, when someone screws up like that, to say "Sorry buddy, your fault, we warned you..." and learn from that experience to not do it again in the future?
(And yes, I realize from a business standpoint this might mean losing a customer... but sometimes the customer ISN'T always right *grumble grumble off my lawn yadda yadda grumble*)
