Don't use mic, mainly because I play at all sort of crazy hours during the day and night, so last thing I need is be yelling in a game chat and wake up the family at 3am.

I'm not arguing with it as much as I'm saying "It really isn't that big a deal". For instance, I wouldn't kick a person just because they can't voice chat. And really, this game isn't that hard at all. People can get through all the content with no voice chat just fine. Surgical precision isn't really key to making it. So lighten up, lol.
It is alot closer than I expected actually. I thought most people did use chat.
I use mumble. find it invaluable. you can talk and fight at the same time. in 1.0 if you were typing you werent fighting. i imagine 2.0 wouldnt be much different
You know with the rate at which they keep adding these Voicechat threads. They might as well just remove the chat function. Nobody is going to use it. :P
Yep and MMO where the only way you can communicate in-game is by /emotes and voicechat! lol
I like voicechat and all, but the reason why they never incorporate it into games is that Voicechat is only usuable with about 5-6 ppl. Sure thats perfect for a party, but not for a large LS. To much chatter and nobody can hear anybody. A Chat log is much easier to digest if you leave your desk for a couple as well.
Scroll up and catch up on what you missed. That's not possible in voicechat! Which further makes MMO's feel like you can never leave your seat!
And quite honestly I sometimes feel like ppl post and push voice chat because they are not comofortable with typing! I learned to type quickly because of chatting in MMO's and IM's. Now kids these days learned to type on their T9's and smartphones! lol So when you put a keyboard in front of them they have problems and would rather use voice chat than learn to type! :P Typing is a life skill that is useful in your work. Learn to use it!
if people are running content that doesn't require surgical precision, they likely aren't very serious about raiding. so my point still stands. furthermore, arguing that most content in this game isn't terribly hard doesn't detract from my point whatsoever, either, as "serious about raiding" and "easy/casual content" don't really correlate.
i also never qualified that my "serious about raiding" comment as specifically relating to FFXIV. in fact, i generalized with "modern MMOs" giving us context outside of FFXIV and it's largely easy battle content. most modern MMOs have far more difficult content than anything we've seen in XIV, and more competition within their communities. additionally, modern MMOs generally aren't as heavily chat-based as XI/XIV. this makes voice chat mostly essential if you're serious about getting the hard stuff done.
This is a discussion board. Let's discuss.
I do not think there is anything wrong with voice. I prefer text.
You, on the other hand, not only prefer voice, but believe text is an inferior mode of communication.
I have completed the same trials in FFXIV as you. I have reaped the same rewards as you. I have done it all through text. I imagine you have done it all through voice. We do things differently, yet we achieve the same shit.
So indulge me. Unpack these variables. Describe the objective position to take, since mine is so hopelessly biased in a matter of pure preference.
OR they're playing a game like Final Fantasy XIV, in which surgical precision is not really needed in even the hardest content.

See: Above post.
And MY point is, it's STILL not really that big a deal, unless you're playing for money or something. I'm sorry, but I just never really took raiding all that seriously. Also, if you're having such a huge problem with a raid that you're getting wiped in it over and over chances are it's not the absence of voice chat that's the problem. You need practice. And a plan. And both can be executed without the ability to speak into a microphone and have everyone hear you yell expletives over and over. Yes, I know, it might help make it easier. But my point is, I never took it so serious that I excluded anyone from a group that didn't have voice chat. To be honest, I don't think any game should be taken that seriously, again, unless you're getting paid to do it.
