Are Mentors seen as unhelpful?

I've only ever encountered a helpful one around when I 1st joined FFXIV

I'm not saying all mentors now are useless, but the general thoughts of them aren't good.

To be fair the Novice Network is a complete joke and should be removed. This game is pretty decent at teaching you the basics you need to know now and if you are having issues there is always someone willing to help in global chat. There is no reason for the Novice Network and it's just creating a bad image of mentors. Most mentors I come across are actually really helpful. You will ofc meet some absolute candymen but because they are rarer they stand out more creating the illusion that they are all that way.

Are they _seen_ as unhelpful? Sure, at times. I think many players are willing to be helpful - mentors or not. On my server, I find that NN has a good community and is more helpful than not. I've run into good mentors and bad mentors. Sure, there are some that are in it just for the mount and have no intention of fulfilling their role. But I don't think such broad strokes are fair to the entire mentor community.
